Through and During with През

През means going through something: a place, like през парка, or a stretch of time, like през лятото (in the summer).

How It Works

1. Through a place. През shows movement through something or across it:

  • Минаваме през парка. (We go through the park.)
  • Влезе през прозореца. (He came in through the window.)
  • Пътуваме през Сърбия. (We travel via Serbia.)

2. During a period of time. През places an event inside a period:

  • seasons: през лятото (in the summer), през зимата (in the winter)
  • parts of the day: през деня (during the day), през нощта (during the night)
  • months and years: през май (in May), през 1995 година (in 1995). See days, months and dates.

3. Every other, and intervals. През ден means every other day, and през седмица means every other week. With a number, през names a repeating interval: Автобусът минава през двайсет минути. (The bus comes every twenty minutes.)

4. Not for a length of time. To say how long something lasted, use the time with no preposition: Спах осем часа. (I slept for eight hours.) Цял ден чакахме. (We waited all day.)

Tip: after през, a masculine noun takes the short article: през парка, not през паркът.

    През ден is a fixed phrase meaning every other day.

Common Mistakes

  • Using през for a length of time, like English for.

    Спах през осем часа.
    Спах осем часа.

    A length of time needs no preposition. With a number, през means every, so през осем часа sounds like every eight hours. През names the period when something happens, as in през нощта.

  • Writing the full article after през.

    Минаваме през паркът.
    Минаваме през парка.

    After a preposition a masculine noun takes the short article.
