Telling the Time
Колко е часът? (What time is it?) — Часът е осем. (It is eight.) Add minutes with и (осем и десет, 8:10) or count down with без (девет без десет, 8:50).
How It Works
1. Asking and answering. Колко е часът? — Часът е два. or just Два. The hour uses the masculine form of the number, because час is masculine: един, два, not една, две (see два and две).
2. Minutes past, with и.
- два и пет (2:05), два и десет (2:10)
- два и четвърт or два и петнайсет (2:15)
- два и половина (2:30)
3. Minutes to, with без. After half past, you count down to the next hour:
- три без двайсет (2:40)
- три без четвърт or три без петнайсет (2:45)
- три без пет (2:55)
You will also hear digital style, such as два и четирийсет (2:40).
4. At what time? Ask В колко часа? and answer with в: в седем часа, в седем и половина. After a number, час takes the count form часа, even after един: в един часа (at one o'clock).
5. Part of the day. Add сутринта (in the morning), следобед (in the afternoon) or вечерта (in the evening): в седем вечерта (at seven in the evening). Timetables use the 24-hour clock: в седемнайсет и трийсет (at 17:30).
Tip: the short numbers петнайсет, двайсет, трийсет and the full ones петнадесет, двадесет, тридесет are both correct (see numbers above ten).

Common Mistakes
Using the feminine form of two for the hour.
Часът е две.Часът е два.The hour agrees with the masculine noun час, so two o'clock is два.
Using the article form instead of the count form after a number.
Срещата е в три часът.Срещата е в три часа.After a number, час takes the count form часа. Часът (the hour) is used only in Колко е часът? and Часът е...
Asking the time with какъв.
Какъв е часът?Колко е часът?The time question is fixed: Колко е часът?, literally "How much is the hour?"
