करि देब

Doing It Fully: करि देब

Level 3Sounds Like kari dēba

देब after the -इ form shows an action done fully, or done for someone else.

How It Works

Awadhi often joins two verbs. The first is in its -इ form and carries the meaning. The second is a helper that adds a shade of feeling. With देब (to give) the shade is "all the way" or "for someone".

FormMeaning
करि दिहिसshe did it all
लिखि देवwrite it (for me)
ठीक करि देबI will fix it for you

देब changes like any verb: दिहिस (ऊ), दिहेन (हम), दिहेव (तुम), देब (हम, future), देव (तुम command).

Notice the first verb always ends in -इ: करि, लिखि, उठाइ. A bare stem (कर) is the Hindi pattern. For "let" use the purpose form and देब instead (हमका जाय देव), because करि देब means "do it fully".

Examples (4)

  1. ऊ सब काम करि दिहिस।

    She finished all the work.

करि दिहिस shows the work done completely.

  2. तुम ई चीठी लिखि देव।

Please write this letter for me.

लिखि देव is the तुम command with the helper देव.

  3. हम तुम्हार फोन ठीक करि देब।

I will fix your phone for you.

देब adds the sense of doing it for someone.

  4. अम्मा हमका पइसा दइ दिहिन।

    Mom gave me the money.

दइ दिहिन uses the plural for a respected person.

Common Mistakes

  • The first verb needs the -इ ending, not the bare stem.

    ऊ सब काम कर दिहिस।
    ऊ सब काम करि दिहिस।

Without -इ the form is Hindi; Awadhi writes करि.
