কেৱল … নহয় … ও

Not Only … but Also …

Level 5Sounds Like kērala … nahaẏa … ō

কেৱল … নহয় … ও means “not only … but also …”: তেওঁ কেৱল গুৱাহাটীতে নহয়, যোৰহাটতো সুপৰিচিত “she is well known not only in Guwahati but also in Jorhat”.

How It Works

The pair works like a frame. Everything in the first part is true, and the second part adds something more.

First partSecond part
কেৱল গুৱাহাটীতে নহয় “not only in Guwahati”যোৰহাটতো সুপৰিচিত “well known in Jorhat too”
কেৱল ধানৰ বাবেই নহয় “not only for rice”শাক-পাচলিৰ বাবেও ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয় “it is used for vegetables too”
কেৱল অসমৰ পৰা নহয় “not only from Assam”মহাৰাষ্ট্ৰ আৰু গুজৰাটৰ মানুহেও “people from Maharashtra and Gujarat too”

The word কেৱল alone means “only”: মই কেৱল এটা কল খালোঁ “I ate only one banana”. With নহয় and -ও it becomes the frame above.

The ending -ও attaches to the second thing you name, at the end of its phrase, and it follows the other endings: গুজৰাটৰ মানুহেও has the doer ending -এ and then -ও.
