In Addition and on the Other Hand

Level 5Sounds Like taduparai / ānahātē

তদুপৰি means “in addition” and আনহাতে means “on the other hand”: তেওঁ এগৰাকী ডাক্তৰ আছিল; তদুপৰি এগৰাকী কবি “she was a doctor, and also a poet”.

How It Works

Both words start the second part. Each part can have its own verb, and a part may leave the verb out when it is clear.

WordMeaningExample
তদুপৰি“in addition, moreover”তেওঁ এগৰাকী ডাক্তৰ আছিল; তদুপৰি এগৰাকী কবি “she was a doctor, and also a poet”
আনহাতে“on the other hand, while”জাপানত টাইফুন, আনহাতে অষ্ট্ৰেলিয়ানসকলে চাইক্ল’ন বুলি কয় “in Japan it is a typhoon, while Australians call it a cyclone”

আনহাতে is usually written as one word. Some writers put a space in it (আন হাতে), and that is not a mistake.

With তদুপৰি the second idea adds to the first, so the two ideas agree: a doctor and a poet. With আনহাতে the two ideas sit side by side as two cases: one thing is true here, another there. Both are common in encyclopedia and news writing.
