Sentences Without a Verb

Level 1Sounds Like si ējana la’raā

Say the two ideas next to each other: আজি সোমবাৰ “today is Monday”.

How It Works

English uses “is” or “am” in these sentences. Assamese does not use one in the present when it says who or what someone is, or what something is like.

SentenceMeaning
সি এজন ল’ৰা।He is a boy.
মই এজন পুলিচ।I am a police officer.
আজি সোমবাৰ।Today is Monday.
চাহ বৰ গৰম।The tea is very hot.

To say “is not”, put নহয় at the end: সি ল’ৰা নহয়। “He is not a boy.”

To say where something is, or that someone has something, use আছে, as in মা ঘৰত আছে। “Mother is at home.” That is a real verb.

Examples (5)

  1. সি এজন ল’ৰা।

    He is a boy.

সি and এজন ল’ৰা stand side by side.

  2. মই এজন পুলিচ।

    I am a police officer.

The speaker says what job they have, with no verb.

  3. আজি সোমবাৰ।

    Today is Monday.

A time word and a day name make a full sentence.

  4. চাহ বৰ গৰম।

    The tea is very hot.

No word for “is” is needed: the describing word গৰম ends the sentence.

  5. তাই এজনী সাংবাদিক।

    She is a journalist.

এজনী is used because the journalist is a woman.
