বৰং

Rather: বৰং

Level 5Sounds Like baraṁ

বৰং means “rather”: তেওঁ চাহ নাখাই বৰং গৰম পানী খালে “he did not drink tea; rather, he drank hot water”.

How It Works

The word comes up in essays and histories. It marks the turn from the idea that is put aside to the one that stays.

Put asideBetter idea after বৰং
তেওঁ চাহ নাখাই “not drinking tea”বৰং গৰম পানী খালে “rather, he drank hot water”
এনে নহয় যে তাই কথা ক’ব নুখুজে “it is not that she does not want to speak”বৰং তাই লাজহে পায় “rather, she is shy”

The stressing ending -হে sometimes shows up in the clause after বৰং, as in লাজহে, and it gives the better idea a little more weight.

When you meet বৰং in a long sentence, look back for the নহয় or the negative verb before it. That clause is the one being put aside.

Examples (3)

  1. তেওঁ চাহ নাখাই বৰং গৰম পানী খালে।

He did not drink tea; rather, he drank hot water.

নাখাই names what is put aside, and বৰং starts what is done.

  2. এনে নহয় যে তাই কথা ক’ব নুখুজে, বৰং তাই লাজহে পায়।

It is not that she does not want to speak; rather, she is shy.

নহয় sets the idea aside, and বৰং starts the idea that is true.

  3. বৰং কাইলৈ ৰাতিপুৱা সোনকালে যাম।

Rather, I will go early tomorrow morning.

বৰং can start a sentence when the idea set aside was in the sentence before.
