একো / কোনো

Nothing and Any

Level 3Sounds Like ēkō / kōnō

একো goes with a negative verb: একো নক’ব! “do not say anything!”. কোনো goes before a noun or stands alone: ইয়াত কোনো সোণ নাই “there isn’t any gold here”.

How It Works

একো is “anything” or “nothing”. It stands where the thing would stand, and the verb is negative: একো নক’ব! “do not say anything!”, মই একো নাজানো “I do not know anything”, নতুন একো নাই “there is nothing new”.

কোনো is “any” or “no”. It stands before a noun: ইয়াত কোনো সোণ নাই “there isn’t any gold here”. Alone, it can mean “nobody”: ইয়াত আন কোনো নাই “there is nobody else here”. In a question কোনো can also sit with a positive verb: তোমাৰ লগত কোনো কলম আছেনে? “do you have any pen with you?”.

WordWith a negative verb
একোnothing, not anything
কোনো + nounno such thing, not any
কোনো alonenobody

The positive partners are কিবা “something” and কোনোবা “someone”.

Examples (5)

    Do not say anything!

একো goes with the negative নক’ব “do not say”.

  2. মই সঁচাকৈয়ে একো নাজানো!

Common Mistakes

  • Using একো with a verb that is not negative.

    মই একো জানো।
    মই একো নাজানো।

In a plain statement একো needs a negative verb, so “I know nothing” is একো নাজানো.
