কেতিয়াও / এতিয়াও

Ever, Never and Still

Level 3Sounds Like kētiẏā'ō / ētiẏā'ō

কেতিয়াও নেৰিব means “do not ever leave”, and মই এতিয়াও পঢ়ি আছোঁ means “I am still reading”.

How It Works

কেতিয়া means “when” and এতিয়া means “now”. The ending -ও adds “even”.

WordVerbMeaning
কেতিয়াওnegativenever: মই কেতিয়াও নোশোওঁ। “I never sleep.”
এতিয়াওhappening nowstill: মই এতিয়াও পঢ়ি আছোঁ। “I am still reading.”
এতিয়াওnegativenot yet: আমি এতিয়াও খোলা নাই। “We are not open yet.”

কেতিয়াও also fits in a question, as in তুমি কেতিয়াও ঘৰৰ কাম নকৰা কিয়? “why don’t you ever do the housework?”. The verb is still negative.

কেতিয়াও covers all time, so in these sentences its verb is negative. To ask “have you ever …?”, Assamese usually uses কেতিয়াবা, as in তুমি কেতিয়াবা মাজুলীলৈ গৈছানে? “have you ever been to Majuli?”. এতিয়াও looks at the present moment, so its verb can be positive or negative, and the meaning changes with it: “still” or “not yet”.

Examples (5)

কেতিয়াও goes with the negative নোশোওঁ “I do not sleep”.

এতিয়াও asks if something is still going on, and -নে makes it a question.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the ন- when the sentence means “never”.

    মই কেতিয়াও জিকোঁ।
    মই কেতিয়াও নিজিকোঁ।

“I never win” needs the negative নিজিকোঁ after কেতিয়াও.
