-dan koʻra

Rather than

Level 4

A-dan koʻra B = B rather than A, B more than A: choydan koʻra qahva (coffee rather than tea), avtobusdan koʻra tezroq (faster than the bus).

How It Works

Koʻra is a postposition. With the ablative -dan it compares two things.

1. Preference
With verbs like yaxshi koʻrmoq and afzal koʻrmoq (to prefer), it names what you like less:

  • Choydan koʻra qahvani yaxshi koʻraman. I prefer coffee to tea.

2. Comparing qualities
It often comes with -roq or koʻproq:

  • Avtobusdan koʻra metro tezroq. The metro is faster than the bus.

Here it means the same as plain -dan (than), but a little more emphatic.

3. Rather than doing
With an -ish verb noun, it says rather than doing: Taksiga pul toʻlashdan koʻra piyoda borish yaxshiroq. Walking is better than paying for a taxi.

4. Do not mix up the cases

  • -dan koʻra: rather than, compared with
  • -ga koʻra: according to (Qoidaga koʻra, according to the rules)

For a neutral, factual comparison, see also -ga qaraganda.

Examples (6)

  1. Choydan koʻra qahvani yaxshi koʻraman.

    I prefer coffee to tea.

Word by Word: Tea-from rather coffee-(obj.) well I-see.

  2. Avtobusdan koʻra metro tezroq.

The metro is faster than the bus.

  3. Taksiga pul toʻlashdan koʻra piyoda borish yaxshiroq.

Walking is better than paying for a taxi.

Word by Word: Taxi-to money paying-from rather on-foot going better.

With a verb, use the -ish verb noun before -dan koʻra.

  4. U gapirishdan koʻra tinglashni afzal koʻradi.

    She prefers listening to talking.

Word by Word: She talking-from rather listening-(obj.) preferable sees.

  5. Bu yil oʻtgan yildan koʻra qor koʻproq yogʻdi.

This year more snow fell than last year.

Word by Word: This year past year-from rather snow more fell.

  6. Buni siz mendan koʻra yaxshiroq bilasiz.

You know this better than I do.

Common Mistakes

  • Using -ga koʻra, which means according to.

    Choyga koʻra qahvani yaxshi koʻraman.
    Choydan koʻra qahvani yaxshi koʻraman.

With -ga, koʻra means according to, so the sentence stops making sense. For rather than, the item takes -dan.

  • Leaving the compared item without -dan.

    Avtobus koʻra metro tezroq.
    Avtobusdan koʻra metro tezroq.

Koʻra needs a case ending before it. In comparisons, the item you set aside always takes -dan.
