yaxshi koʻrmoq

Liking and Loving

Level 2

Yaxshi koʻrmoq (literally "to see as good") means to like or to love: Men choyni yaxshi koʻraman (I like tea), Men seni yaxshi koʻraman (I love you).

How It Works

Building the sentence
Yaxshi means "good" and koʻrmoq means "to see". Together they mean to like or to love. The endings go on koʻrmoq:

  • yaxshi koʻraman I like, yaxshi koʻrasiz you like, yaxshi koʻradi he or she likes
  • Negative: yaxshi koʻrmayman I don't like

What you like is a specific thing or a whole category, so it takes The Definite Object Ending -ni: musiqani, futbolni, choyni. For an activity, use the verb noun from The Verb Noun -(i)sh with -ni: suzishni yaxshi koʻraman (I like swimming).

Like or love
With people, yaxshi koʻrmoq means to love: Men seni yaxshi koʻraman is the everyday way to say "I love you". The opposite is yomon koʻrmoq, to hate or strongly dislike.

Yaxshi koʻrmoq or yoqmoq?
Yaxshi koʻrmoq describes a lasting preference, with the person as the subject. It Pleases Me turns the sentence around: the liked thing is the subject, and the person takes -ga (Menga bu kitob yoqadi). It is common for first impressions. The verb yoqtirmoq is another way to say to like, and it also takes -ni.

Common Mistakes

  • Negating yaxshi instead of the verb.

    Men choyni yaxshi emas koʻraman.
    Men choyni yaxshi koʻrmayman.

Yaxshi never changes. Put the negative -ma- on koʻrmoq: koʻrmayman.

  • Mixing the yoqmoq pattern into yaxshi koʻrmoq.

    Menga choy yaxshi koʻraman.
    Men choyni yaxshi koʻraman.

With yaxshi koʻrmoq, the person is the subject (men) and the liked thing takes -ni. Menga belongs with yoqmoq.
