-maslik
Not Doing: -maslik
Stem + -maslik = not doing: kechikmaslik (not being late). With kerak it means must not; with uchun, so as not to.
How It Works
Use -maslik wherever you need the idea of not doing something as a noun.
1. Building the form
Add -maslik to the stem: kel- → kelmaslik, oʻqi- → oʻqimaslik, ishla- → ishlamaslik. It contains -ma-, the negative of verbs.
2. Endings
Like other long words ending in k, the k becomes g before a possessive ending: -masligim, -masliging, -masligi, -masligimiz, -masligingiz. Before -ga it is written -maslikka. See k > g, q > gʻ almashuvi.
3. Must not
-maslik kerak states a general rule: Unutmaslik kerak (One must not forget). With a possessive ending it names the person: Kechikmasligingiz kerak (You must not be late). -ish kerak emas mostly means there is no need, although in everyday talk it can also sound like you shouldn't. -maslik kerak is the clear way to say must not; see -(i)sh kerak.
4. So as not to
With uchun: Adashmaslik uchun xarita oldim (I took a map so as not to get lost).
5. With case endings
- -maslikka harakat qilmoq: try not to
- -maslikka qaror qilmoq: decide not to
- -masligini soʻramoq: ask someone not to
6. Compared with a command
A direct request uses -mang: Kechikmang! (Don’t be late!). -maslik kerak sounds like a rule or advice.
