mana / ana
Here It Is, There It Is
Mana = here it is (near you). Ana = there it is (farther away). Mana, kitobingiz. (Here is your book.) Ana, avtobus kelyapti. (Look, there comes the bus.)
How It Works
1. Mana: here it is
Use mana when you hand something over or show something close to you.
- Mana, kitobingiz. (Here is your book.)
- — Pasportim qani? — Mana. ("Where is my passport?" "Here it is.")
2. Ana: there it is
Use ana for something you can see but that is farther away, or something happening over there.
- Ana, avtobus kelyapti. (Look, there comes the bus.)
- Ana, koʻrdingizmi? (There, did you see?)
3. With bu, u, shu and oʻsha
Put mana or ana in front of a pointing word for extra emphasis: mana bu (this one right here), ana u (that one over there), mana shu, ana oʻsha (that very one). In everyday speech you will also hear manavi and anavi. See This One, That Same One.
4. Mana with time
Mana can open a sentence about how much time has passed: Mana, ikki yil boʻldi. (It has been two years now.)
5. Pointing, not place
Mana and ana do not say where something is. For here and there as places, use shu yerda, bu yerda or u yerda.
6. Mana or Marhamat?
Both can go with handing something over. Here You Are, Please Go Ahead is the polite offer, please take it. Mana simply shows it: here it is.
