Marhamat

Here You Are, Please Go Ahead

Level 1

Marhamat = here you are, please go ahead. The speaker is giving or inviting.

How It Works

Giving, not asking. Marhamat is said by the person who offers. You will hear it all the time from hosts, shopkeepers and officials.

  • Handing something over: — Pasportingiz? — Marhamat. (— Your passport? — Here you are.)
  • Inviting someone in or to sit: Marhamat, kiring. (Please come in.) Marhamat, oʻtiring. (Please, have a seat.)
  • Offering food or drink: Marhamat, choy iching. (Please, have some tea.)
  • Letting someone go ahead: Marhamat, savolingizni bering. (Go ahead, ask your question.)

With a verb, marhamat comes first and the verb is a polite command: kiring, oʻtiring, iching.

Asking for something uses Iltimos instead: Bir choy, iltimos. (One tea, please.)

Hosts often say Marhamat together with Xush kelibsiz: Xush kelibsiz! Marhamat, kiring. (Welcome! Please come in.)

Common Mistakes

  • Using marhamat when you are the one asking for something.

    Marhamat, bir choy.
    Bir choy, iltimos.

Marhamat, bir choy is what a waiter says when bringing you tea: "Here is a tea." To order tea, say Bir choy, iltimos.

  • Using the dictionary form in -moq after marhamat.

    Marhamat, oʻtirmoq.
    Marhamat, oʻtiring.

An invitation needs the polite command form oʻtiring, not the dictionary form oʻtirmoq.
