Between, Among, In the Middle
Orasida = between or among: doʻstlar orasida (among friends). Oʻrtasida = in the middle of: xona oʻrtasida (in the middle of the room). For between A and B, say A bilan B orasida or oʻrtasida.
How It Works
These are place words of the same kind as ustida and ichida. Each is a noun with a possessive ending and -da:
- ora (gap, space between) → orasi → orasida (between, among)
- oʻrta (middle) → oʻrtasi → oʻrtasida (in the middle of, between)
Among a group. After a plural noun, orasida means among: doʻstlar orasida (among friends), talabalar orasida (among the students).
In the middle. Oʻrtasida names the centre of a space: xona oʻrtasida (in the middle of the room), yoʻl oʻrtasida (in the middle of the road).
Between two things. Join the two with bilan, then add orasida or oʻrtasida: maktab bilan uy orasida (between the school and the house), Toshkent bilan Samarqand oʻrtasida (between Tashkent and Samarkand). Both words work here. For relations between people or countries, oʻrtasida is the usual choice: ikki davlat oʻrtasida (between the two countries).
Person endings. With a pronoun, the possessive on ora changes to match, as in -(i)miz: oramizda (among us, between us), orangizda (among you), oralarida (among them). Bu gap oramizda qolsin means Let this stay between us.
Other cases. Swap -da for -ga or -dan to show movement, as with all place words (koʻmakchi ot + kelishik): Kitoblar orasidan eski suratni topdim (I found an old photo among the books), Stolni xona oʻrtasiga qoʻydik (We put the table in the middle of the room).

- Kitoblar orasidan eski suratni topdim.

-dan instead of -da: from among.
Common Mistakes
Leaving out the possessive -si after a noun.
Xona oʻrtada katta stol turibdi.Xona oʻrtasida katta stol turibdi.After a noun, the place word needs the possessive -si: xona oʻrtasida.
Using a plain pronoun before orasida.
Bu gap biz orasida qolsin.Bu gap oramizda qolsin.With a pronoun, the person goes on ora itself: oramizda (between us), orangizda (among you).
