-(i)miz
Our: -(i)miz
To say our, add -miz after a vowel or -imiz after a consonant: oila → oilamiz, uy → uyimiz.
How It Works
The ending for our has two shapes:
- After a vowel: -miz. oila + -miz → oilamiz (our family), ota + -miz → otamiz (our father).
- After a consonant: -imiz. uy + -imiz → uyimiz (our house), maktab + -imiz → maktabimiz (our school), dars + -imiz → darsimiz (our lesson).
As with my, the pronoun is usually dropped: Uyimiz katta (Our house is big). Add bizning only for emphasis: Bizning uyimiz (our house).
Our or we are? The predicate ending -miz means we are, and after a vowel it looks the same: oʻqituvchimiz can be our teacher or we are teachers. Position tells them apart. Biz oʻqituvchimiz is a whole sentence: We are teachers. Oʻqituvchimiz keladi has a separate verb, so oʻqituvchimiz is its subject: Our teacher is coming.
Plural first, then possessive. For our houses, -lar comes before -imiz: uy + -lar + -imiz → uylarimiz. See qoʻshimchalar tartibi. A case ending comes last: uyimizga (to our house).
The usual seam change applies: qishloq → qishlogʻimiz (our village); see k > g, q > gʻ almashuvi.
