biror / birorta

Any

Level 3

biror + noun, birorta + noun or birortasi: Biror savol bormi? (Any questions?) Birorta ham xato yoʻq. (There isn't a single mistake.)

How It Works

1. In questions
Biror savol bormi? (Are there any questions?) Biror marta Samarqandga borganmisiz? (Have you ever been to Samarkand?)

2. In if-clauses
With If: -sa they mean any at all: Biror narsa kerak boʻlsa, menga ayting. (If you need anything, tell me.)

3. In negatives
With a negative verb or yoʻq, they mean no ... at all. Add ham for not a single one: Birorta ham boʻsh joy qolmadi. (There isn't a single free seat left.) The words in Nobody, Nothing, Never are similar: Hech qanday savol yoʻq. (There are no questions at all.)

4. In positive sentences
Biror can also mean some ... or other: Biror kishidan soʻrayman. (I'll ask someone.)

5. Biror or birorta?
Before a noun both work: biror dorixona or birorta dorixona (any pharmacy). Only birorta can stand alone and take endings: birortasi, birortasini. You will also hear the variant biron: biron narsa (anything).

Examples (6)

  1. Biror savol bormi?

    Are there any questions?

Word by Word: any question is-there-?

  2. Birortasini koʻrmadim.

I didn't see any of them.

    Word by Word: any-of-them-(object) I-did-not-see

Birorta + si (possessive) + ni (object).

  3. Biror narsa kerak boʻlsa, menga ayting.

If you need anything, tell me.

  4. Sinfda birorta ham boʻsh joy qolmadi.

There isn't a single free seat left in the classroom.

Birorta ham with a negative verb means not a single one.

  5. Biror marta Samarqandga borganmisiz?

Have you ever been to Samarkand?

  6. Bu yerda birorta dorixona bormi?

Is there a pharmacy anywhere around here?

Common Mistakes

  • Using biror alone without a noun.

    Birorni koʻrmadim.
    Birortasini koʻrmadim.

Biror always needs a noun after it. To say any of them, use birorta with a possessive ending: birortasini.

  • Using birorta ham with a positive verb.

    Birorta ham xato qildim.
    Birorta ham xato qilmadim.

Birorta ham means not a single one, so the verb must be negative: qilmadim.

  • Using a hech word in an if-clause.

    Hech narsa kerak boʻlsa, ayting.
    Biror narsa kerak boʻlsa, ayting.

Hech words are for negative sentences. For anything in an if-clause, use biror narsa.
