Use the participial form in the phrase with بغیر.

How It Works

This entry teaches the participial pattern: کہے, کیے, کھائے and similar forms. Despite its perfective shape, the action is absent from the situation described.

Both سوچے بغیر and بغیر سوچے occur. Keep any object or other complement with its verb so the missing action remains clear.

A separate construction uses an oblique infinitive with کے بغیر. Do not blend the two by putting a bare -نا form directly before بغیر.

Examples (4)

  1. اس نے سوچے بغیر جواب دیا۔

    They answered without thinking.

    سوچے names the action that did not accompany the answer.

  2. مریم بغیر کچھ کہے چلی گئی۔

    Maryam left without saying anything.

    بغیر comes before the verb phrase in this example.

  3. میں ناشتہ کیے بغیر گھر سے نکلا۔

    I left home without having breakfast.

    The masculine main verb gives the actual past event; breakfast was not eaten.

  4. براہ کرم دروازہ کھٹکھٹائے بغیر اندر نہ آئیے۔

    Please do not come in without knocking on the door.

    A respectful negative request keeps کھٹکھٹائے inside the without phrase.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting an unchanged infinitive directly before بغیر.

    وہ سوچنا بغیر بولی۔
    وہ سوچے بغیر بولی۔

    The illustrated participial pattern requires سوچے; the separate infinitival pattern would use سوچنے کے بغیر.
