چاہنا کہ + Subjunctive
Wanting Someone Else to Act
State who wants something, then what they want to happen.
How It Works
Use a full کہ clause when the desired event has its own participant. For the speaker’s own intended activity, an infinitive often suffices: میں رکنا چاہتی ہوں.
Respect is selected within the desired clause. A request involving آپ uses a form such as آپ رکیں, even when the person expressing the wish is singular.
Negation can appear in either clause. مریم نہیں چاہتی کہ بلال آئے negates the wish for Bilal to come. مریم چاہتی ہے کہ بلال نہ آئے states a wish for him not to come. Context can make the two intentions similar.
Examples (4)
- مریم چاہتی ہے کہ بلال آئے۔
Maryam wants Bilal to come.
Each verb belongs to a different subject.
- میں چاہتا ہوں کہ آپ یہ خط پڑھیں۔
I want you to read this letter.
The masculine speaker uses چاہتا; respectful آپ selects پڑھیں.
- ہم چاہتے ہیں کہ بچے یہاں کھیلیں۔
We want the children to play here.
The children control the plural subjunctive کھیلیں.
- بلال چاہتا ہے کہ ہم دیر نہ کریں۔
Bilal wants us not to be late.
The desired clause contains its own negation.
