Verb Stem + پڑنا

An Action Breaking Out

Level 3

Compare رو پڑا with رونا پڑا.

How It Works

With the sudden-reaction pattern, the subject stays unmarked: مریم ہنس پڑی. The ending of پڑنا follows the person reacting.

Number changes the later form: بچے رو پڑے. The main stem رو does not acquire its own agreement ending.

For obligation, keep the infinitive ending and the appropriate experiencer phrase: اداکار کو رونا پڑا. The small difference between رو and رونا changes the construction.

Examples (4)

  1. مریم اچانک ہنس پڑی۔

    Maryam suddenly burst out laughing.

    The feminine subject selects پڑی.

  2. بچے ڈر کر رو پڑے۔

The children got frightened and burst into tears.

رو stays bare before plural پڑے.

  3. دروازہ کھلتے ہی وہ دوڑ پڑا۔

As soon as the door opened, he started running.

دوڑ پڑا marks the sudden start of running.

  4. اس منظر میں اداکار کو رونا پڑا۔

In that scene, the actor had to cry.

The contrasting obligation uses رونا and a کو-marked participant.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the obligation form when describing a sudden reaction.

    مریم اچانک ہنسنا پڑی۔
    مریم اچانک ہنس پڑی۔

The intended sudden laugh uses bare ہنس, not infinitive ہنسنا.
