How It Works

ٹوٹ گیا says that something broke; the added verb is not a journey. A feminine subject gives ٹوٹ گئی. Learn the combination with its ordinary meaning.

Subject agreement also occurs in combinations with an object, such as مریم سوال سمجھ گئی. Do not insert نے simply because سوال is present.

Separate a change from a passive action. کھل گیا means “opened” or “came open”; کھولا گیا means “was opened.” The first uses کھلنا, while the passive is built from transitive کھولنا.

    The thread broke.

    The masculine subject selects گیا.

  2. رسی ٹوٹ گئی۔

    The rope broke.

    The feminine subject selects گئی.

  3. مریم سوال سمجھ گئی۔

    Maryam understood the question.

    The feminine subject controls گئی; سوال does not require نے.

  4. کھڑکی کھل گئی۔

    The window opened.

    کھل is the intransitive stem, not the passive participle کھولا.
