Preposition На

Level 1Sounds Like na

The preposition на is used to describe being on a surface or at an event (Locative), or moving onto a surface or to an event (Accusative).

How It Works

The preposition на is one of the most versatile words in Ukrainian. Its meaning changes based on the case of the noun that follows it:

  • Static Location (Locative Case): Answers the question де? (where?). It is used for:
    • Surfaces: на столі (on the table).
    • Open spaces: на вулиці (on the street; outside).
    • Events/Activities: на концерті (at the concert), на уроці (at the lesson).
    • Specific institutions: на пошті (at the post office), на роботі (at work).
    • Compass directions: на півночі (in the north), на заході (in the west).
    • Musical instruments: грати на гітарі (to play the guitar).
Note: For location inside a vehicle, use у/в (в автобусі). While на автобусі is commonly heard to express the method of travel, it is often considered colloquial. The Instrumental case (автобусом) is the standard literary form.
  • Directional Movement (Accusative Case): Answers the question куди? (where to?). It is used when moving toward the locations mentioned above:
    • Я йду на роботу (I am going to work).
    • Поклади це на стіл (Put this onto the table).
  • Time Expressions: Used in certain time phrases. Note that for "on the weekend", the standard literary form is у вихідні, while на вихідних is a common colloquialism. With the Accusative case, it expresses the intended duration of a result (often with verbs of motion): на тиждень (for a week, e.g., "I went there for a week"). It is also used for telling time, such as minutes past the hour: п'ятнадцять хвилин на другу (1:15, literally "fifteen minutes towards the second hour") or scheduling an event (на сьому годину).
  • States and Conditions (Locative Case): Used to express being in a certain state or period: на пенсії (in retirement), на канікулах (on vacation).
  • Purpose or Target (Accusative Case): Used to indicate what something is for: на сніданок (for breakfast).
  • Frequency (Accusative Case): Used to express how often something happens: раз на тиждень (once a week).
  • Comparisons and Differences (Accusative Case): Used to show by how much things differ: на два роки старший (two years older).
  • Division and Parts (Accusative Case): Used when dividing or breaking things into parts: розрізати на дві частини (to cut into two parts).
  • Mathematics (Accusative Case): Used for multiplication and division: множити на два (to multiply by two), ділити на три (to divide by three).
  • Translation (Accusative Case): Used to indicate the target language when translating: перекладати на українську (to translate into Ukrainian). Note that modern editors often prefer using the Instrumental case without a preposition: перекладати українською.
  • Verb Government (Accusative Case): Certain verbs and adjectives are often used with на followed by the Accusative case. Examples include чекати на (to wait for), дивитися на (to look at), хворіти на (to be sick with), сподіватися на (to hope for), перетворитися на (to turn into), and схожий на (similar to).
  • Fixed Phrases: Used in many common adverbial and motivational phrases, such as на жаль (unfortunately), на щастя (fortunately), на прохання (at the request of), and на честь (in honor of).

Important Notes:

  • Origin: When you go на (to) a place, you return з (from) it. In Ukrainian, з (and its variants із/зі) is the universal preposition for origin, pairing with both на and в/у.
  • Unlike the preposition у/в, на does not change its form for euphony. It always remains на.
  • Remember that when using the Locative case, certain consonants change before the ending -і (e.g., підлога becomes на підлозі). See consonant alternation for more details.

Examples (5)

  1. Книга лежить на столі.

The book is lying on the table.

Word by Word: Book lies on table.

Here, 'на' is used with the Locative case to show a static position on a surface.

  2. Я йду на концерт.

I am going to a concert.

Word by Word: I go to concert.

Here, 'на' is used with the Accusative case because it indicates movement toward an event.

  3. Він зараз на роботі.

He is at work right now.

Word by Word: He now at work.

Ukrainian uses 'на' for the location 'work' rather than 'в'.

  4. Поклади ключі на полицю.

Put the keys onto the shelf.

Word by Word: Put keys onto shelf.

The Accusative case is used here to show the destination of the action.

  5. Вона грає на гітарі.

    She plays the guitar.

Word by Word: She plays on guitar.

An idiomatic use: 'на' + Locative is always used for playing musical instruments.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Locative case for movement.

    Я йду на роботі.
    Я йду на роботу.

When you are moving toward a destination (where to?), you must use the Accusative case (роботу), not the Locative (роботі).

  • Using 'на' for the country Ukraine.

    Я живу на Україні.
    Я живу в Україні.

In modern standard Ukrainian, 'в Україні' is the norm. 'На Україні' is outdated and widely felt to be disrespectful.

  • Using 'на' with the language you speak.

Different MeaningЯ розмовляю на українській мові.
    Я розмовляю українською.

To say what language you speak, 'українською' is the natural, short form. 'На українській мові' is also used, mostly for 'in the Ukrainian language' (books, services), and it sounds heavier with the verb 'розмовляти'.
