The preposition на + Locative case answers the question де? (where?). It is used for surfaces (on the table), events (at the concert), and open areas (in the square).

How It Works

The preposition на is one of the most common ways to express location in Ukrainian. It is used in several main contexts:

  • Physical Surfaces: When something is on top of something else. (e.g., на столі - on the table).
  • Events and Activities: Being present at a scheduled event rather than inside a building. (e.g., на уроці - at the lesson).
  • Open Spaces: Locations that aren't enclosed by four walls. (e.g., на вулиці - on the street).
  • Geographic Features: Used with islands, mountains, peninsulas, and certain historical regions. (e.g., на горі - on the mountain, на Донбасі - in Donbas).
  • Musical Instruments: Used with the verb 'грати' (to play). (e.g., грати на піаніно).
  • Compass Points: Directions. (e.g., на півночі - in the north).
  • Specific Buildings: Used by fixed convention instead of 'в/у'. (e.g., на пошті - at the post office, на вокзалі - at the station, на заводі - at the factory).

Ending Rules:
1. Neuter nouns overwhelmingly take the ending -і (e.g., на вікні, на морі). If the stem ends in a velar (к, г, х), they undergo consonant alternation before -і (e.g., яблуко → на яблуці). However, neuter nouns with the suffix -к- take -у (e.g., ліжко → на ліжку).
2. Most feminine nouns take -і (e.g., робота → на роботі). Soft feminine nouns ending in -я also take -і (e.g., кухня → на кухні), while those ending in -ія take -ї (e.g., станція → на станції). Feminine nouns ending in -ка, -га, -ха undergo consonant alternation before -і (e.g., зупинка → на зупинці).
3. Masculine nouns have a split: many take -і and undergo consonant alternation (e.g., берег → на березі, поверх → на поверсі). However, masculine nouns with suffixes like -ок, -ак, -ик, -ник or certain monosyllabic words take -у (e.g., літак → на літаку, дах → на даху).
4. Masculine nouns denoting people (animates) typically take -ові, -еві, or -єві, but can also take parallel endings in -у/-ю or -і (e.g., на батькові or на батьку).
5. Masculine nouns ending in a soft consonant take -і (e.g., кінь → на коні) or -ю (e.g., край → на краю). Nouns ending in -й after a vowel take -ї (e.g., трамвай → на трамваї).
6. Feminine nouns ending in a consonant take -і (e.g., піч → на печі).
7. Vowel dropping often occurs in the stem (e.g., ринок → на ринку).
8. Plural nouns always take -ах or -ях (на столах, на вулицях).

Examples (5)

  1. Книга лежить на столі.

The book is lying on the table.

Word by Word: Book lies on table.

Here, 'на столі' indicates a physical surface. 'Стіл' (masculine) changes to the Locative ending '-і'.

  2. Ми зараз на концерті.

We are at the concert now.

Word by Word: We now on concert.

Events like concerts use 'на' to indicate participation or attendance.

  3. Діти граються на вулиці.

The children are playing on the street.

Word by Word: Children play-self on street.

Open spaces like streets (вулиця) use 'на'. Note the feminine ending '-і' replacing '-я'.

  4. Вона добре грає на гітарі.

    She plays the guitar well.

Word by Word: She well plays on guitar.

In Ukrainian, you play 'on' an instrument using the Locative case.

  5. На руці є годинник.

There is a watch on the hand.

Word by Word: On hand is watch.

Demonstrates consonant mutation: 'рука' (hand) ends in 'к', which changes to 'ц' before the Locative '-і'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Accusative case for static location.

    Я зараз на роботу.
    Я зараз на роботі.

'На роботу' (Accusative) means 'to work' (direction). To say you are already there, you must use the Locative 'на роботі'.

  • Using 'на' for the country Ukraine.

    Я живу на Україні.
    Я живу в Україні.

Modern standard Ukrainian uses 'в Україні' to denote sovereignty. 'На' is reserved for territories or regions, not independent nations.
