полягати в/у + Locative

Полягати В or У with Locative

Level 5Sounds Like polâgati v/u + míscevij

The phrase полягати в/у (to consist in/lie in) is used in formal Ukrainian to explain the underlying principle or reason behind something. It is followed by a noun or pronoun in the locative case.

How It Works

This pattern is a staple of academic, legal, and journalistic Ukrainian. It functions as a definition marker.

1. Preposition Choice:
Following the rules of euphony, use в after vowels and у after consonants, at the start of a sentence, or after a comma (as punctuation resets the euphony rules). However, you must use в if the following word starts with a vowel, regardless of the preceding sound or sentence position (e.g., В основі...). Crucially, у must always be used before words starting with в, ф, льв, св, тв, or хв, regardless of whether the preceding word ends in a vowel.

2. Case and Mutation:
The noun following the preposition must be in the locative case. Be aware of consonant alternations that occur before the locative ending -і:

  • г → з: інтрига → в інтризі
  • к → ц: помилка → у помилці
  • х → с: епоха → в епосі

3. Register:
This is a high-register expression. In casual speech, people often simply drop the verb and keep the prepositional phrase (e.g., Проблема в тому, що...), or use a zero copula (e.g., Проблема — це...). In writing or formal debate, however, полягати в is the standard way to identify a core issue or essence.

4. Aspect Note:
This verb is tantum imperfectum (only exists in the imperfective aspect) when used in this sense. The perfective counterpart полягти exists but is restricted to physical meanings (e.g., to fall in battle). Therefore, even when describing a past situation, you use the imperfective form полягала.

5. Clause Linking and Frequency:
This verb is overwhelmingly used in the third-person singular (полягає) and plural (полягають). When linking to a full clause rather than a simple noun, use the construction полягати в тому, що (consists in the fact that) or полягати в тому, щоб (consists in [doing something]). Note that тому is simply the locative case of the demonstrative pronoun те (that).

Examples (4)

  1. Основна проблема полягає в тому, що нам бракує часу.

The main problem lies in the fact that we lack time.

Word by Word: Main problem lies in that, that to-us lacks time.

This uses the common 'в тому, що' construction to introduce a clause.

  2. У чому полягає сенс вашої пропозиції?

What is the essence of your proposal?

Word by Word: In what lies sense of-your proposal?

This is the standard way to ask for a definition or clarification of an idea.

  3. Суть демократії полягає у вільному виборі.

The essence of democracy consists in free choice.

Word by Word: Essence of-democracy lies in free choice.

Note the use of 'у' after the vowel 'є' (in 'полягає') because the following word 'вільному' starts with the consonant 'в'. This follows the rules of euphony.

  4. Головна складність полягає в цій техніці.

The main difficulty lies in this technique.

Word by Word: Main difficulty lies in this technique.

Demonstrates the k -> ц mutation in the locative case (техніка -> техніці). Note the use of 'в' after the vowel 'є' in 'полягає'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the preposition 'на' (influenced by Polish 'polegać na').

    Проблема полягає на цьому.
    Проблема полягає в цьому.

In standard Ukrainian, 'полягати' always takes 'в' or 'у' for this meaning. Using 'на' is considered a Polonism.

  • Using the Russicism 'заключатися в'.

    Суть заключається в ідеї.
    Суть полягає в ідеї.

The verb 'заключатися' is a direct borrowing from Russian and is discouraged in literary Ukrainian.

  • Confusing it with 'складатися з'.

    Команда полягає в п'яти гравцях.
    Команда складається з п'яти гравців.

Use 'складатися з' for physical components or members, and 'полягати в' for abstract principles.
