Velar Consonant Alternations

Level 6Sounds Like čerguvannâ k/c g/z h/s

In Ukrainian, the 'hard' velar consonants к, г, х cannot stand before the 'soft' vowel -і. When grammar requires an -і ending (like in the Dative or Locative cases), these consonants must change: к → ц, г → з, and х → с.

How It Works

The alternation is a fundamental rule of Ukrainian phonology. It occurs in three primary contexts:

1. Feminine Nouns (Declension I): In the Dative and Locative singular.

  • рука → у руці (hand → in the hand)
  • дорога → на дорозі (road → on the road)
  • муха → на мусі (fly → on the fly)

2. Masculine & Neuter Nouns (Declension II): In the Locative singular, but only for nouns that take the -і ending (rather than -у).

  • берег → на березі (bank → on the bank)
  • поріг → на порозі (doorstep → on the doorstep)
  • вухо → у вусі (ear → in the ear)

3. Word Formation: Before suffixes starting with 's' sounds, most notably the adjective suffix -ський.

  • козак + -ський → козацький
  • Прага + -ський → празький
  • чех + -ський → чеський

Note: This is distinct from the First Palatalization (к/ч, г/ж, х/ш) which occurs in the Vocative case and verb conjugations.

Examples (5)

  1. Він тримає олівець у руці.

He is holding a pencil in his hand.

Word by Word: He holds pencil in hand.

The noun 'рука' (hand) ends in 'к'. In the Locative case with the ending '-і', 'к' changes to 'ц'.

  2. Ми зустрінемося на порозі школи.

We will meet on the doorstep of the school.

Word by Word: We will-meet on doorstep of-school.

The noun 'поріг' (doorstep) ends in 'г'. In the Locative case, 'г' changes to 'з' before '-і'.

  3. У цій книзі багато цікавих картинок.

There are many interesting pictures in this book.

Word by Word: In this book many interesting pictures.

The noun 'книга' (book) changes its stem-final 'г' to 'з' in the Locative case.

  4. Вона розповіла про це своїй подрузі.

She told her friend about it.

Word by Word: She told about this her friend.

The noun 'подруга' (female friend) is in the Dative case; 'г' shifts to 'з' before the ending '-і'.

  5. На твоїй щоці щось є.

There is something on your cheek.

Word by Word: On your cheek something is.

The noun 'щока' (cheek) changes 'к' to 'ц' in the Locative case.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to mutate the consonant (often due to influence from Russian).

    Вона в аптекі.
    Вона в аптеці.

In Ukrainian, the 'к' must change to 'ц' before the Locative '-і'. Leaving it as 'к' is a common error for learners familiar with other Slavic languages where this mutation is lost.

  • Applying the mutation to masculine nouns that take the -у ending.

    Я був у парці.
    Я був у парку.

The mutation only occurs if the noun takes the '-і' ending. Many masculine nouns (like 'парк') take '-у' in the Locative, so no mutation happens.

Learn This First

Velar consonant alternations (к/ц, г/з, х/с) are a morphophonological rule in Ukrainian triggered by specific grammatical endings, primarily the '-і' ending found in the Dative and Locative cases of feminine nouns, as well as some masculine Locative forms. Learners must first be familiar with these case functions and the basic noun gender system to apply the shifts correctly.
