Dative Experiencer

Level 2Sounds Like davalʹnij pereživača

In Ukrainian, internal states (like feeling cold, bored, or hungry) are expressed by putting the person in the Dative case and the state in an impersonal form.

How It Works

The Dative Experiencer (давальний переживача) is used to describe physical sensations, psychological states, age, and necessity. Unlike English, which uses the Nominative case (I, you, he), Ukrainian uses the Dative case (мені, тобі, йому).

1. Physical and Emotional States
These usually combine a Dative noun/pronoun with an adverb ending in -о.

  • Мені холодно — I feel cold (To me [it is] cold).
  • Йому сумно — He feels sad.

2. Age
In Ukrainian, you don't 'have' years or 'are' an age; the years 'happen' to you in the Dative.

  • Оксані двадцять років — Oksana is twenty years old.

3. Necessity and Permission
Words like треба (need), можна (may/can), and не можна (must not) always take a Dative experiencer.

  • Нам треба йти — We need to go.

4. Noun Endings
When using names or nouns, remember the specific Dative endings:

  • Masculine: Prefers -ові/-еві for people (братові, директорові).
  • Feminine: Uses -і/-ї, which often triggers consonant mutations (e.g., подруга → подрузі).

Examples (5)

  1. Мені дуже весело сьогодні.

I am having a lot of fun today.

Word by Word: To me very fun today.

The pronoun 'мені' is in the Dative case because the person is experiencing the state of being 'fun/cheerful'.

  2. Студентові треба більше часу.

    The student needs more time.

Word by Word: To the student [it is] necessary more time.

The masculine noun 'студент' takes the ending '-ові', which is the preferred Dative form for people.

  3. Тобі вже можна заходити.

You are allowed to enter now.

Word by Word: To you already possible to enter.

The word 'можна' (possible/allowed) requires the person to be in the Dative case (тобі).

  4. Подрузі було соромно за мене.

My friend (female) felt ashamed of me.

Word by Word: To the friend was shamefully for me.

Note the 'г' to 'з' mutation in 'подрузі' (from подруга) in the Dative case.

  5. Йому виповнилося п'ять років.

    He turned five years old.

Word by Word: To him fulfilled five years.

Age constructions always use the Dative case for the person.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Nominative case (Я) instead of Dative (Мені) for feelings.

    Я холодно.
    Мені холодно.

In Ukrainian, 'Я холодний' means you are a cold person by nature. To say you feel cold, you must use the Dative 'Мені'.

  • Forgetting consonant mutations in feminine Dative nouns.

    Ольгі сумно.
    Ользі сумно.

Feminine nouns ending in -га, -ка, -ха change their consonants to -зі, -ці, -сі in the Dative case.

  • Using the verb 'to be' (є) in age constructions.

    Мені є десять років.
    Мені десять років.

Ukrainian does not use the present tense copula 'є' when stating age.

Learn This First

To understand the Dative Experiencer, you first need to be familiar with the basic forms of the dative case (usually introduced via the recipient function) and how personal pronouns change. Additionally, since many of these expressions describe states without an explicit verb, understanding the zero copula is essential.
