Dative Experiencer with Predicative

Level 4Sounds Like davalʹnij eksperíêncera z predikativom

In Ukrainian, feelings, physical states, and needs are often expressed by putting the person in the Dative case (to me, to you) followed by a state-word (predicative). Unlike English 'I am cold,' Ukrainian says 'To me [it is] cold.'

How It Works

The Dative Experiencer pattern is the standard way to describe how someone feels or what they need. It consists of two main parts:

1. The Experiencer: The person feeling the state is in the dative case (e.g., мені, тобі, нам).
2. The Predicative: A word describing the state. These are often adverbs ending in -о (холодно, цікаво) or modal words (треба, можна).

Tense and Agreement:

  • Present Tense: The verb 'to be' is omitted (a zero copula). Example: Мені сумно (I am sad).
  • Past/Future Tense: You must use the neuter singular form of the verb бути (було or буде), regardless of the gender or number of the person. Example: Студентам було цікаво (The students were interested).

Types of Predicatives:

  • Physical/Emotional States: холодно (cold), гаряче (hot), сумно (sad), весело (cheerful), соромно (ashamed).
  • Modality (Necessity/Permission): треба / потрібно (need), можна (may/can), слід / варто (should/worth).

Examples (5)

  1. Мені дуже холодно сьогодні.

    I am very cold today.

Word by Word: To me very cold today.

The pronoun 'I' becomes 'мені' (dative), and 'холодно' is the predicative adverb describing the state.

  2. Тобі треба більше відпочивати.

    You need to rest more.

Word by Word: To you [it is] necessary more to rest.

Necessity is expressed using the dative 'тобі' and the modal word 'треба'.

  3. Дітям було весело на святі.

The children were having fun at the party.

Word by Word: To children was (neuter) fun at party.

Even though 'дітям' is plural, the verb 'було' remains in the neuter singular because the construction is impersonal.

  4. Нам було соромно за цю помилку.

We were ashamed of this mistake.

Word by Word: To us was (neuter) ashamed for this mistake.

The state of being ashamed (соромно) is experienced by 'us' (нам).

  5. Йому буде цікаво прочитати цю книгу.

He will be interested in reading this book.

Word by Word: To him will be (neuter) interesting to read this book.

Future tense uses 'буде' (neuter singular) to describe a future state of interest.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Nominative case (I) instead of the Dative case (To me).

    Я треба йти.
    Мені треба йти.

In Ukrainian, modal words like 'треба' require the logical subject to be in the dative case, not the nominative.

  • Making the verb agree with the person's gender in the past tense.

    Вона була холодно.
    Їй було холодно.

The verb must always be the neuter singular 'було' because these are impersonal constructions. Also, the person must be in the dative (їй).

  • Using a personal adjective where Ukrainian uses an impersonal word for a feeling.

    Different MeaningЯ сумний.
    Мені сумно.

'Я сумний' is correct, but it describes you as a sad person. 'Мені сумно' says how you feel.

Learn This First

To learn this pattern, you need to know how to decline personal pronouns into the dative case, as they represent the person 'feeling' the state. You also need to understand the zero copula in Ukrainian present tense sentences and the general function of the dative case in expressing subjective experiences or needs.
