Age in the Dative
In Ukrainian, you don't 'are' an age; instead, years 'are to you.' The person whose age is being stated must be in the Dative Case.
How It Works
This construction is an impersonal 'experiencer' pattern, similar to how Ukrainians express feelings like Мені холодно (I am cold).
1. The Person (Dative Case)
The subject of the English sentence becomes the Dative recipient in Ukrainian:
- Pronouns: Мені (I), Тобі (you), Йому (he), Їй (she), Нам (we), Вам (you pl.), Їм (they).
- Nouns: Masculine nouns usually take -ові/-еві (братові, татові), while feminine nouns take -і and often undergo consonant mutations (донька → доньці).
2. The Word 'Year' (Agreement)
The word for 'year' must change based on the number:
- 1: рік (e.g., двадцять один рік)
- 2, 3, 4: роки (e.g., тридцять два роки) — see 2, 3, 4 with Nominative Plural.
- 5–20, 0: років (e.g., десять років) — see 5 and above with Genitive Plural.
3. Tense Changes
Examples (4)
- Мені двадцять один рік.
I am twenty-one years old.
Word by Word: To me twenty one year.
Uses the Dative 'мені' and the singular 'рік' because the number ends in 1.
- Скільки років вашій доньці?
How old is your daughter?
Word by Word: How many years [to] your daughter?
The word 'донька' changes to 'доньці' in the Dative case, showing the k to ts mutation.
- Минулого року моєму братові було тридцять два роки.
Last year my brother was thirty-two years old.
Word by Word: Last year to my brother was thirty two years.
Uses the Dative 'братові', the past tense 'було', and 'роки' for the number 2.
- Наступного місяця мамі буде п'ятдесят років.
Next month mom will be fifty years old.
Word by Word: Next month to mom will be fifty years.
Uses the Dative 'мамі', the future 'буде', and 'років' for the number 50.
Common Mistakes
Using the Nominative case (I) instead of Dative (To me).
Я двадцять років.Мені двадцять років.In Ukrainian, age is something that 'happens' to you, so you must use the Dative case 'Мені', not the subject 'Я'.
Making the past tense verb agree with the person's gender.
Вона була двадцять років.Їй було двадцять років.Because this is an impersonal construction, the verb must always be the neuter singular 'було', regardless of who the person is.
Using the wrong form of 'year' for numbers 2, 3, or 4.
Тобі три років.Тобі три роки.Ukrainian requires the Nominative Plural 'роки' after the numbers 2, 3, and 4, unlike Russian which uses the Genitive Singular.
How It Connects

For ages five and above, the noun 'років' must be used in the genitive plural, requiring knowledge of higher numeral agreement.
