Dative Addressee and Beneficiary
The dative case (кому? чому?) marks the indirect object—the person or thing receiving something, being spoken to, or benefiting from an action.
How It Works
The dative case primarily functions as the indirect object. It identifies the Addressee (who you talk to) and the Beneficiary (who you help or give to).
1. Morphological Endings:
- Masculine Singular: Use -ові / -еві / -єві for people and animals (e.g., братові, лікареві). This is the most natural and preferred Ukrainian form. The ending -у / -ю is used for inanimate objects or to avoid repetition when multiple nouns appear together.
- Feminine Singular: Use -і / -ї. Note that stems ending in к, г, х undergo consonant mutation to ц, з, с (e.g., подруга → подрузі).
- Neuter Singular: Use -у / -ю (e.g., місту).
- Plural (All Genders): Use -ам / -ям (e.g., друзям).
2. Common Verbs:
The dative is required after verbs like дякувати (to thank), допомагати (to help), телефонувати (to call), and дарувати (to give a gift).
3. Beyond Giving:
At this level, remember that the dative also marks the 'experiencer' in constructions for age (Мені 20 років) and feelings or necessity (Йому холодно).
Examples (5)
- Я пишу листа своєму братові.
I am writing a letter to my brother.
Word by Word: I write letter my brother (Dat).
The masculine noun 'брат' takes the preferred '-ові' ending as the addressee of the letter.
- Вона допомагає своїй подрузі.
She is helping her friend.
Word by Word: She helps her friend (Dat).
The feminine noun 'подруга' changes its stem 'г' to 'з' before the dative ending '-і'.
- Ми дякуємо нашим вчителям.
We thank our teachers.
Word by Word: We thank our teachers (Dat).
The plural ending '-ям' is used here for the beneficiaries of the thanks.
- Передайте це повідомлення директорові.
Hand this message to the director.
Word by Word: Hand this message director (Dat).
In formal contexts, the '-ові' ending is strictly required for masculine addressees.
- Лікар дає поради пацієнтові.
The doctor gives advice to the patient.
Word by Word: Doctor gives advice patient (Dat).
The patient is the beneficiary of the advice, marked by the dative case.
Common Mistakes
Using the Accusative case for 'thanking'.
Я дякую вас.Я дякую вам.Unlike English or Russian, the verb 'дякувати' in Ukrainian always requires the dative case (to whom you give thanks).
Forgetting consonant mutations in feminine nouns.
Я телефоную донькі.Я телефоную доньці.Stems ending in 'к' must change to 'ц' before the dative '-і' ending.
Using the Accusative for the person you tell something.
Я сказав брата правду.Я сказав братові правду.The person you tell something to is in the Dative. For masculine people both endings are standard (брату or братові). The Accusative 'брата' is not.
