ความ + Adjective
Turning a Quality into a Noun
Use ความ (khwaam) + Adjective/Feeling to create abstract concepts like 'happiness', 'beauty', or 'love'.
How It Works
The pattern ความ + Adjective is a common way to discuss abstract qualities in Thai. It transforms a word describing a quality or a state into a noun. In Thai, quality words such as ดี (good) can function as predicates. With this prefix, ความดี (goodness) is a noun that can function as a subject or object.
1. Usage with Adjectives
When attached to a quality, it represents the essence of that quality:
- ดี (good) → ความดี (goodness/virtue)
- สวย (beautiful) → ความสวย (beauty)
- เร็ว (fast) → ความเร็ว (speed)
2. Usage with Abstract or Mental Verbs
It is also used with verbs that describe mental states, emotions, or abstract concepts:
- รัก (to love) → ความรัก (love)
- เชื่อ (to believe) → ความเชื่อ (belief)
- ตาย (to die) → ความตาย (death)
- จริง (to be true) → ความจริง (truth)
3. Register and Common Phrases
Learn the established expression with each word. For example, เขามีความสุขมาก means "He is very happy" and literally says "He has much happiness." This example uses มี + ความสุข; it does not establish a rule for every abstract state.
4. Distinction from การ (kaan)
It is crucial to distinguish ความ from การ. Many nouns for qualities and feelings use ความ, while activity nouns such as การกิน (eating) use การ. This is a useful starting point, not an exclusive static-versus-dynamic division. The examples above include ความตาย (death), and the correct prefix depends on the established noun you want.
Examples (4)
- ความรักทำให้คนตาบอด
Love makes people blind.
Word by Word: love make people blind
Here, 'khwaam' turns the verb 'rak' (to love) into the abstract noun 'love'.
- เขามีความสุขมาก
He is very happy.
Word by Word: he have happiness very
Literally “He has much happiness.” The example เขามีความสุขมาก uses มี (have) with ความสุข (happiness) to say that he feels happy. Learn this expression without extending it to every abstract state.
- ความเร็วของรถคันนี้สูงมาก
The speed of this car is very high.
Word by Word: speed of car [vehicle classifier] this high very
'khwaam-reo' turns the adjective 'reo' (fast) into the noun 'speed'.
- นั่นเป็นความคิดที่ดี
That is a good idea.
Word by Word: that be thought [relative marker] good
'khwaam-khit' turns the verb 'khit' (to think) into the noun 'thought' or 'idea'.
Common Mistakes
Using 'ความกิน' for the intended noun 'eating'.
ความกินสำคัญมากการกินสำคัญมากFor the activity noun 'eating', use การกิน, as in การกินสำคัญมาก. ความกิน does not express that intended noun here. Learn the established nominal form with each verb rather than treating prefix selection as an absolute action-versus-state rule.
Using 'เป็นความสุข' when you mean that you feel happy.
ผมเป็นความสุขผมมีความสุข'Phom pen khwaam-suk' sounds like you ARE the concept of happiness itself. To say you feel happy, use 'mii' (to have) happiness.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand how to turn a quality into a noun using 'ความ', you first need to be comfortable with how adjectives function in Thai (often acting like verbs). It is also helpful to understand the general concept of nominalization in Thai, which is most commonly introduced through the 'การ + Verb' pattern.
- Adjectives Work As Verbs
Understanding that adjectives in Thai function as verbs (stative verbs) is essential because 'ความ' specifically nominalizes these qualities.
Level 1 - การ + VerbTurning a Verb into a Noun
This is the parallel nominalization pattern for action verbs; understanding how 'การ' creates abstract nouns helps the learner distinguish when to use 'ความ' for qualities and feelings.
