Compare นักเรียน (student), นักร้อง (singer), นักธุรกิจ (businessperson), นักเขียน (writer), and นักวิ่ง (runner). Their full meanings identify different roles.

How It Works

1. Learn the Complete Role Word
นักร้อง means “singer”, นักเรียน means “student”, นักธุรกิจ means “businessperson”, นักเขียน means “writer”, and นักวิ่ง means “runner”. The following material can be connected to an activity such as เรียน (study) or a field such as ธุรกิจ (business). These complete words do not all entail a paid career, expertise, or lifelong dedication.

2. Read the Rest of the Sentence
เขาเป็นนักร้องที่มีชื่อเสียงมาก adds that the singer is very famous. That fame comes from ที่มีชื่อเสียงมาก, not from นัก alone. Similarly, ทีมชาติ in the runner example identifies the national team. The student example states a uniform requirement within that example; it is not a claim about every school’s actual policy.

3. A Role Versus a Description
นักวิ่ง names a runner. A clause such as คนที่วิ่ง describes the person who runs; additional wording supplies whether the running is happening now. Do not treat this comparison as a universal ban on using a role word for a person doing something on one occasion.

4. Compare Other Person Expressions
The delivery example requests คนส่งของ with คน; the carpenter example requests ช่างไม้ with ช่าง. The related ผู้ entry includes ผู้สมัคร (applicant) and ผู้โดยสาร (passenger). Learn these complete expressions without imposing an automatic professional-status or social-status ranking among all the prefixes.

5. A Separate Use of นัก
In วันนี้ร้อนนัก, นัก intensifies ร้อน: “It is extremely hot today.” This is a different use from นัก in the person words above. Read its position and complete context rather than assigning every นัก occurrence a person meaning.

Common Mistakes

  • Not using the requested คนส่งของ delivery-person expression.

    The exercise requests คนส่งของ, “delivery person”. นักส่งของ does not match that requested expression. Learn this word choice without deriving a rule that every manual or service role must exclude นัก.

  • Replacing ช่าง in the requested carpenter word ช่างไม้.

    For “carpenter” in this task, use ช่างไม้. นักไม้ does not match that complete word. This exercise teaches the stated vocabulary, not a universal ban on นัก in every technical field.
