กำลัง
Action in Progress
The examples place กำลัง before eating, rain falling, going to work, or reading. Two also retain อยู่ after the described activity. The selected English translation uses a present reference time; กำลัง alone does not require that time to be now.
How It Works
Read The Whole Activity
The four native sentences describe eating, rain falling, going to work, and reading. กำลัง precedes กิน, ตก, ไป, and อ่าน in these examples. The rain and reading sentences also contain อยู่ after the activity. Represent อยู่ functionally as an ongoing marker here, not as literally staying in a place.
Reference Time
The translations select a present ongoing reading. กำลัง itself does not supply an English present-tense ending. Read surrounding time expressions and context to identify the reference time; the displayed bare clauses do not establish it for every use. The examples do not show that adding อยู่ guarantees greater naturalness, that both versions are identical in every context, or how frequent either pattern is.
The Two Tasks
The first task requests the plain preference statement ฉันชอบคุณ, “I like you”, rather than ฉันกำลังชอบคุณ. This is the requested reading, not proof that every feeling or state predicate is barred from an ongoing construction in every discourse. The second asks for เขากำลังกินข้าว with กำลัง before กิน. Preserve this exact response rather than เขากินกำลังข้าว; the task does not establish the position of every marker or every lexical use of กำลัง.
Linked Comparisons And Research
Read กำลังจะ, จะ, and การ in their own full linked constructions. An English translation ending in -ing does not make activity nominalization and an ongoing clause identical. A claim about lack of tense or agreement inflection does not certify that every Thai word has invariant spelling or sound in all contexts. The selected NIU dictionary entry describes an action going on or a state prevailing at a given time and includes multiple lexical senses; its simplified present-tense note is not used here as a present-only rule. No audio, frequency, or compulsory register conclusion follows.
Examples (4)
- เขากำลังกินข้าว
He is eating a meal.
Word by Word: he | ongoing marker | eat a meal
กำลัง precedes กินข้าว, represented functionally as eating a meal. “He” is the selected reading of เขา, and the translation selects a present reference time; the Thai clause alone does not fix that time for every context.
- ฝนกำลังตกอยู่
It is raining.
Word by Word: rain | ongoing marker | fall | ongoing marker
Both กำลัง and อยู่ are retained as ongoing markers in the rain clause. The translation selects present ongoing rain; the sentence does not establish how frequent this combination is or require that every weather statement include both markers.
- ฉันกำลังไปทำงาน
I am going to work.
Word by Word: I | ongoing marker | go | work
กำลัง precedes ไป in the displayed activity of going to work. The translation selects an ongoing journey at a present reference time; กำลัง alone does not verify someone’s location, destination reached, or current employment.
- เขากำลังอ่านหนังสืออยู่
He is reading a book.
Word by Word: he | ongoing marker | read | book | ongoing marker
กำลัง appears before อ่าน and อยู่ after หนังสือ. Both are represented functionally in the ongoing reading clause; อยู่ is not translated literally as staying. “He” and a present reference time are selected translation readings.
Common Mistakes
Adding กำลัง to the task requesting a plain preference statement.
ฉันกำลังชอบคุณฉันชอบคุณFor the requested “I like you” statement, retain ฉันชอบคุณ rather than ฉันกำลังชอบคุณ. This exercise compares that exact plain preference reading with an ongoing construction; it does not establish a universal ban covering every state or feeling in every context.
Moving กำลัง after กิน in the requested eating sentence.
เขากินกำลังข้าวเขากำลังกินข้าวFor this task, retain เขากำลังกินข้าว with กำลัง before กิน, rather than เขากินกำลังข้าว. The rain and reading examples put อยู่ after their activity, but this does not make every use of อยู่ sentence-final or every lexical กำลัง an ongoing marker.

Related Patterns
- อยู่ (ongoing)Ongoing Action
Compare อยู่ after the activity in the two full examples that retain both markers; the link does not establish identical meanings in all contexts.
Level 1 - กำลังจะAbout to
Compare กำลังจะ in its own imminent-action examples with the ongoing activities displayed here.
Level 2 - จะFuture and Intention
Compare จะ in its own full prospective or intention contexts; this does not make every ongoing clause present-only.
Level 1 - การ + VerbTurning a Verb into a Noun
Compare การวิ่ง as activity nominalization with a clause describing an ongoing activity, without equating them because English can use -ing in both.
Level 3 - Verb Forms and Time
Compare the lack of tense or agreement inflection in the linked explanation; no invariant-sound or all-form claim follows.
