กำลัง ... อยู่
In the Middle of Doing
Use กำลัง ... อยู่ to say you are 'in the middle of' doing something. It wraps around the verb phrase like a pair of brackets.
How It Works
Ongoing Actions With กำลัง ... อยู่
In this paired-marker pattern, กำลัง comes before the verb phrase and อยู่ follows it. They present the action as ongoing at the time relevant to the sentence. These are separate words, not a circumfix attached to a verb.
1. The Pattern in These Examples
Subject + กำลัง + Verb + (Object) + อยู่.
In พวกเรากำลังเรียนภาษาไทยอยู่, ภาษาไทย follows เรียน and comes before อยู่. In คุณกำลังทำอะไรอยู่?, the question word อะไร is between ทำ and อยู่. For the eating exercise, use กำลังกินข้าวอยู่, with ข้าว before อยู่.
2. Time Comes From Context
เขากำลังอาบน้ำอยู่ can describe his shower now. เมื่อวานตอนสองทุ่ม ผมกำลังนอนหลับอยู่ places the ongoing sleep yesterday at 8 PM. The markers do not themselves impose a present-tense date; the time phrase or surrounding context supplies the reference time.
3. Separate Marker Uses
กำลัง can mark an ongoing situation before a verb, and อยู่ can mark continuance after a verb. The paired construction here uses both. Do not treat either marker as universally obligatory wherever English uses an -ing form, or assume that using both guarantees understanding in every context.
4. Do Not Insert an English Auxiliary
For the requested eating construction, use ผมกำลังกินข้าวอยู่. Do not insert เป็น as a translation of English 'am'. คือ is also not an auxiliary needed to form this pattern. This teaches the particular eating construction, not a ban on these words inside every possible larger sentence.
5. Keep the Functions Distinct
กำลัง presents an ongoing situation; it does not by itself mean the action has just started. จะ can express future reference or intention. แล้ว can express completion or a changed situation; it is not a logical opposite that is universally forbidden alongside an ongoing marker.
Examples (4)
- เขากำลังอาบน้ำอยู่
He is taking a shower.
Word by Word: He [ongoing] bathe-water [continuing]
This can describe the shower as ongoing at the moment of speaking; the present interpretation comes from the context.
- คุณกำลังทำอะไรอยู่?
What are you doing?
Word by Word: You [ongoing] do what [continuing]?
Notice that the question word 'what' (อะไร) stays in its normal position, and 'อยู่' follows it.
- พวกเรากำลังเรียนภาษาไทยอยู่
We are studying the Thai language.
Word by Word: We [ongoing] study language Thai [continuing]
The object 'Thai language' is placed between the verb and the final marker 'อยู่'.
- เมื่อวานตอนสองทุ่ม ผมกำลังนอนหลับอยู่
Yesterday at 8 PM, I was sleeping.
Word by Word: Yesterday time two [night-hour], I [ongoing] sleep [continuing]
The time phrase places the ongoing sleep yesterday at 8 PM. It shows that the paired markers do not by themselves fix the event at the present moment.
Common Mistakes
Not placing อยู่ after ข้าว in the requested eating construction.
กำลังกินอยู่ข้าวกำลังกินข้าวอยู่For the requested กำลัง + กินข้าว + อยู่ construction, use กำลังกินข้าวอยู่. กำลังกินอยู่ข้าว does not follow this object-before-อยู่ ordering.
Inserting เป็น as an English-style auxiliary in the requested eating pattern.
ผมเป็นกำลังกินข้าวอยู่ผมกำลังกินข้าวอยู่Use ผมกำลังกินข้าวอยู่ for this pattern, without เป็น as a translation of am. ผมเป็นกำลังกินข้าวอยู่ inserts an auxiliary that this construction does not require. This does not ban every use of เป็น in a larger sentence.
How It Connects
Learn This First
The 'กำลัง ... อยู่' pattern is a compound construction. To understand it, you must first know the individual function of 'กำลัง' as a continuous marker and 'อยู่' as a marker of state or location. Combining them creates a stronger emphasis on an action happening 'right now'.

- อยู่ (ongoing)Ongoing Action
อยู่ follows the verb phrase here and conveys continuance; it can also occur as an ongoing marker without กำลัง.
Level 1 - Verb Forms and Time
Thai verbs do not inflect for person, number, or tense; separate words and context convey aspect and time.
Foundations - จะFuture and Intention
จะ can express future reference or intention; distinguish that function from an ongoing situation with กำลัง.
Level 1 - แล้วAlready Done
แล้ว can express completion or a changed situation; it is not a logical opposite of กำลัง or a universal ban on combining markers.
