เหมือนกัน

The Same and Me Too

Level 2

เหมือนกัน (mǔean gan - rising tone, mid tone) can express 'the same' or 'likewise'. In context, it can describe a shared quality or add that an action or state applies to someone else too.

How It Works

เหมือนกัน can express similarity or add a shared action or state. Read it with the surrounding statement:

  • Expressing Agreement: After a statement, a reply can use 'me too', 'I also...', or 'me neither' / 'I don't either' to share the relevant action or state. This is one use of เหมือนกัน. A negative reply must also express negation; the positive and negative strings are not identical. In these examples, the word ก็ adds 'also' or 'too' before the verb. For this negative example, the word order is Subject + ก็ + ไม่ + Verb + เหมือนกัน.
  • Standalone Reply: You can use เหมือนกัน as a short reply (with a polite particle such as ครับ or ค่ะ) meaning 'Same here!' or 'Me too!', when the preceding statement supplies the shared meaning.
  • Describing Similarity: Use it to describe two or more items that are similar in kind or quality. The word กัน contributes a shared relation here; the complete expression need not assert that A and B are one physical object.
  • Naming the Comparison: เหมือนกัน does not introduce B in the comparison frame 'A เหมือนกัน B'. To express the intended comparison with B, use เหมือน or 'เหมือนกับ' (e.g., 'A เหมือนกับ B'), or group the subjects together before the verb (e.g., 'A กับ B เหมือนกัน').
  • The Difficulty Example: In this example, เหมือนกัน follows the word for difficult. The surrounding context can give a qualified assessment, expressed here as 'quite difficult'. The particle นะ also appears in this example. For example, 'ยากเหมือนกันนะ' means 'it's quite difficult'. The assessment comes from the whole sentence; the expression does not always specify a fixed degree, and the particle is not required in every such sentence.
  • Do Not Assume 'Anyway': A contrastive context may lead an English translator to use 'anyway' or 'nonetheless'. That does not make this expression a general replacement for 'อยู่ดี' in every sentence. Read the complete statement before choosing an English connective.
  • Related Wording: เช่นกัน (chên-gan) is related wording for 'likewise' or 'same to you'. The surrounding situation determines which wording fits.
  • Positioning: It follows the relevant action or quality in these examples, but it need not end the entire sentence. Further specification or a following clause can come after it.
  • Nuance: It can describe a shared type or appearance, as well as a shared action or state. To identify one particular physical object, use a construction that makes that identity clear, such as เดียวกัน.

Examples (6)

  1. ผมก็คิดเหมือนกัน

    I think so too.

Word by Word: I also think same

Here, 'ก็' adds 'also', and 'เหมือนกัน' shares the preceding opinion: I think so too.

  2. ผมก็ไม่ชอบเหมือนกัน

    I don't like it either.

Word by Word: I also not like same

The supplied negative reply means I do not like it either. Negation is expressed before the verb; the additive meaning is shared with the positive reply, but the two strings are not identical.

  3. ไม่รู้เหมือนกัน

    I don't know either. / I'm not sure myself.

Word by Word: Not know same

In context, this can mean I do not know either, or that I am not sure myself. The surrounding conversation tells you which reading is intended.

  4. เราใส่เสื้อสีเหมือนกัน

We are wearing the same color shirt.

Word by Word: We wear shirt color same

This describes two different shirts that share the same color.

  5. ยินดีที่ได้รู้จักครับ — เหมือนกันครับ

Nice to meet you. — Likewise.

Word by Word: Glad that get know [polite] — Same [polite]

In this greeting exchange, 'เหมือนกัน' returns the sentiment: likewise. The ending adds politeness to the reply.

  6. ภาษาไทยยากเหมือนกันนะ

Thai is quite difficult, isn't it?

Word by Word: Language Thai difficult quite [softener]

Here, 'เหมือนกัน' accompanies a qualified assessment expressed as quite difficult, and 'นะ' also appears. Interpret the whole sentence; the expression does not have one fixed degree meaning after every adjective.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'เหมือนกัน' before the named comparison partner in this frame.

    ผมเหมือนกันคุณ
    ผมเหมือนกับคุณ

For the intended comparison A is like B, the supplied 'เหมือนกัน' frame does not introduce B. Use 'เหมือน' or 'เหมือนกับ' (A เหมือนกับ B), or group the subjects before the comparison (A กับ B เหมือนกัน). This is a rule for naming that comparison partner, not a claim that no word or clause can ever follow the expression.

  • Putting the shared-house modifier before the noun.

    เราอยู่เดียวกันบ้าน
    เราอยู่บ้านเดียวกัน

In this sentence, put the noun for house before the modifier meaning one shared house. The correct sentence says that we live in the same house. The deliberately reversed noun and modifier in the first sentence do not form this standard Thai noun phrase. This is a word-order exercise; a sentence meaning that we are at home too is not wrong simply because it has a different meaning.

  • Reversing the words in the expression for repeating the previous choice.

    เอาเดิมเหมือนครับ
    เอาเหมือนเดิมครับ

The expression for the same as before puts the comparison word before the word for previous or original. Keep that order after the request verb. The deliberately reversed sequence in the first sentence does not form the intended Thai expression. A request to match someone else's choice can be grammatical and is not the error tested here.

เหมือนกันLevel 2The Same and Me Too

Learn This First

To understand 'เหมือนกัน' (the same / me too), you first need to know the base word 'เหมือน' which means 'like' or 'similar'. Additionally, since this pattern is often used to say 'me too' (ผมก็...เหมือนกัน), familiarity with the particle 'ก็' is necessary to link the subjects correctly. Finally, basic sentence structure is required to know where to place this modifier.
