มั้ย

Spoken ไหม

Level 1

มั้ย (mái) is the casual, spoken version of the question particle ไหม. It is placed at the end of a sentence to ask a 'yes/no' question.

How It Works

มั้ย is a sentence-final particle used to form Yes/No questions. It typically appears at the end of the thought you are expressing, though it can be followed by polite particles or softening particles like นะ.

1. Usage and Tone:
While textbooks teach the formal spelling ไหม, you will hear มั้ย very frequently in daily interactions, movies, and songs. According to Thai reading rules, the formal spelling ไหม produces a rising tone. However, you commonly hear a high tone in everyday speech. The informal spelling มั้ย reflects this spoken high tone. The spelling มั้ย is informal. In formal writing, use the standard spelling ไหม rather than treating the informal spelling as the standard. The phrase หรือไม่ is another option in formal contexts. If you want to be polite in casual speech, you simply add a politeness particle like ครับ or คะ after มั้ย. In very fast speech, it is sometimes shortened even further to a quick 'ma' (มะ).

2. Meaning and Answering:
It turns a statement into a Yes/No question. A simple มั้ย question normally asks about an affirmative statement. For ordinary negative confirmation questions, particles like เหรอ provide a useful comparison. Negative suggestions can nevertheless use มั้ย (e.g., ไม่ไปมั้ย? - 'Should we not go?'). It can also follow a larger affirmative clause that contains a negative verb (e.g., มีใครไม่ไปมั้ย? - 'Is there anyone not going?'). When มั้ย is used with action verbs, it frequently acts as an invitation or asks about immediate intent, translating closer to 'Do you want to...?' or 'Will you...?' (e.g., ไปมั้ย usually means 'Do you want to go?'). Furthermore, มั้ย is used for present, future, or general facts. It can also be used to ask about past events if you are asking a simple yes/no question about whether an action occurred, usually accompanied by a past time word (e.g., เมื่อวานฝนตกมั้ย - 'Did it rain yesterday?'). To ask specifically whether an action has happened yet, หรือยัง makes that 'yet' meaning explicit; asking about a past event and asking about completion by now are different questions.

To answer a มั้ย question, the usual short answer repeats the main verb, adjective, or the auxiliary verb at the end of the question (like ได้ or เป็น) to confirm the action or state. To give a negative answer, say ไม่ (not) plus that same word. For the basic verb or adjective questions here, answer with that verb or adjective rather than automatically using ใช่ or ไม่ใช่ by themselves. ใช่ and ไม่ใช่ are the direct answers to a confirmation question such as ใช่มั้ย. For example, with an adjective acting as a verb: Q: หิวมั้ย? (Are you hungry?) -> A: หิว (Yes) / ไม่หิว (No). You can answer with just ครับ (for men) or ค่ะ (for women) as an affirmative reply in context. Repeating the relevant verb or adjective also makes the answer explicit (e.g., หิวครับ / หิวค่ะ).

3. Nouns, Tags, and Wh- Words:
While มั้ย generally cannot be attached directly to a noun to ask 'Is this a [noun]?' (e.g., 'นี่หนังสือมั้ย' is unnatural), in colloquial Thai, the verb (เป็น or คือ) is frequently dropped when the noun describes an attribute, status, or identity (e.g., คนไทยมั้ย? - Are you Thai?, ของแท้มั้ย? - Is it genuine?). Alternatively, adding 'ใช่' in front creates the extremely common compound ใช่มั้ย (Right? / Isn't it?). This turns a statement into a tag question when you want someone to confirm what you are saying, and it works perfectly with nouns. To answer, use ใช่ (Yes, that's right) or ไม่ใช่ (No, that's not right). When มั้ย is used with Wh- question words like อะไร (what) or ใคร (who), the complete yes/no question can give them an indefinite reading, as in มีอะไรมั้ย ('Is there anything?') or มีใครมั้ย ('Is there anyone?'). Do not add มั้ย mechanically to every information question. Unlike เหรอ, which implies you might already suspect the answer, a plain มั้ย question does not itself make the same claim of surprise or prior evidence.

Examples (5)

  1. ไปมั้ย?

    Would you like to go?

    Word by Word: go [question]?

A very common way to invite someone or ask if they are going.

  2. หิวมั้ยครับ?

    Are you hungry? (polite)

Word by Word: hungry [question] [polite male]

Notice that the politeness particle 'ครับ' comes after the question particle 'มั้ย'.

  3. สวยมั้ย?

    Is it beautiful?

    Word by Word: beautiful [question]?

Used to ask for an opinion on appearance.

  4. เข้าใจมั้ย?

    Do you understand?

Word by Word: enter heart [question]?

A standard way to check for understanding in a casual setting.

  5. เผ็ดมั้ยคะ?

    Is it spicy? (polite)

Word by Word: spicy [question] [polite female]

Commonly used when asking about food.

Common Mistakes

  • Placing the politeness particle before the question particle.

    ไปครับมั้ย
    ไปมั้ยครับ

In this question, มั้ย comes before the polite particle ครับ. The corresponding polite question particle for a female speaker is คะ, as in the example เผ็ดมั้ยคะ?.

  • Confusing มั้ย (question) with ไม่ (not).

    มั้ยไป
    ไม่ไป

มั้ย is only used at the end of a sentence to ask a question. ไม่ (falling tone) is used before a verb to negate it.

  • Answer “Yes, I Am Going”

    ไปมั้ย? — ไม่ไป
    ไปมั้ย? — ไป

The question ไปมั้ย? asks whether the person is going. For the requested affirmative answer, reply ไป, repeating the verb. The reply ไม่ไป means that the person is not going, so it gives the opposite answer. Both replies can be grammatical; this task asks for the affirmative meaning and does not declare every contextual reply with ใช่ wrong.
