Confirmation Questions with ใช่ไหม

Level 1

ใช่ไหม follows the statement being checked in these examples. The first and third sentences also have a final particle after it. The question does not prove that the proposed statement is true or that the speaker has particular evidence.

How It Works

Displayed confirmation questions: The native examples check nationality, the day, a food preference, and spiciness. Compare ไหม in the requested hunger question. The alternative with ใช่ไหม can seek confirmation; it does not require seeing that someone looks hungry or holding a passport.

Reply patterns: The selected teaching notes display confirmation replies ใช่ and ไม่ใช่, alongside verb-echo replies to examples with ไหม. The second exercise asks for the exact ไป reply in Q: ไปไหม? A: ไป. These examples do not establish that ใช่ can answer only two specific question forms, or that ไม่ใช่ is restricted to nouns.

Final particles: The nationality example ends in ใช่ไหมครับ; the preference example ends in ใช่ไหมคะ. Compare the linked ค่ะ entry in its own context, while preserving the displayed คะ spelling. Neither particle proves the speaker’s identity or guarantees politeness, and these examples do not make a final particle compulsory.

Written variant: Compare มั้ย as a different written question-particle form. No audio was inspected, so this lesson does not establish actual pronunciation, rapid-speech behavior, or an almost-always frequency claim. Read each complete question and reply rather than applying a rule to every possible statement.

Examples (4)

  1. คุณเป็นคนไทยใช่ไหมครับ

    You are Thai, right?

Word by Word: you | are | Thai | ใช่ไหม [confirmation tag] | ครับ [final particle]

The question seeks confirmation of the proposed identity. ครับ is the displayed final particle; it does not prove the speaker’s gender or that the addressee is Thai. No passport or other evidence is stated.

  2. วันนี้วันจันทร์ใช่ไหม

    Today is Monday, isn't it?

Word by Word: today | Monday | ใช่ไหม [confirmation tag]

The utterance checks the stated day. It is an example question, not a verification that today is actually Monday or that the speaker has a particular degree of certainty.

  3. เขาชอบกินเผ็ดใช่ไหมคะ

He likes eating spicy food, right?

Word by Word: he | likes | eating spicy [food] | ใช่ไหม [confirmation tag] | คะ [question-ending particle]

The selected food context reads กินเผ็ด as eating spicy food. The question checks a preference, without proving that preference. The exact ending is คะ, not ค่ะ; no speaker identity or guaranteed social effect is inferred.

  4. เผ็ดใช่ไหม

    It's spicy, right?

Word by Word: spicy | ใช่ไหม [confirmation tag]

The thing described as spicy is supplied by context; it or ini is not overt in the Thai. The question seeks confirmation without establishing the quality as a verified fact.

Common Mistakes

  • Use the requested hunger question with ไหม.

    คุณหิวใช่ไหม
    คุณหิวไหม

Produce คุณหิวไหม exactly for this task. คุณหิวใช่ไหม can instead ask for confirmation of being hungry, but it is not the requested wording. That alternative does not inherently require visible evidence or a known answer.

  • Use the exact requested verb-echo reply ไป.

    Q: ไปไหม? A: ใช่
    Q: ไปไหม? A: ไป

This exercise requests Q: ไปไหม? A: ไป, repeating ไป in the answer. The archived answer ใช่ does not match that exact requested reply. One dialogue does not establish a universal ban on ใช่ outside questions with ใช่ไหม or ไม่ใช่.
