เป็น (ทักษะ)
Know How to
Place เป็น (pen) after the action and any object in the displayed phrases to express knowing how to do the activity.
How It Works
To express knowing how to do an activity, place เป็น after the action and any object in the displayed phrases. This skill construction differs from the copular use of เป็น, meaning 'be'. Read the whole construction rather than replacing every English 'can' or 'be' with the same Thai word.
1. Sentence Structure
Here the pattern is Verb + (Object) + เป็น:
- ฉันว่ายน้ำเป็น (I can swim / I know how to swim)
The marker follows the activity phrase, not necessarily every other part of the sentence. The original question has a particle after it, and the cooking example continues with a contrast.
2. How to Negate
To deny knowing how to do the activity, put ไม่ directly before the skill marker. Putting ไม่ before the main action instead gives ordinary negation, as in ฉันไม่ว่ายน้ำ = I don't swim; refusal or choice would depend on context, not on that placement alone. For the lack-of-skill reading requested by the task, compare:
- Correct: Verb + (Object) + ไม่เป็น
- Incorrect for that intended reading: ไม่ + Verb + (Object) + เป็น
This lack-of-skill reading does not itself say that the person never learned the activity or can never learn it.
3. How to Ask Questions
In the displayed question, add ไหม after the skill marker:
- Verb + (Object) + เป็นไหม
The informal spelling ไหม → มั้ย appears in the shorter form เป็นมั้ย. It does not establish that every speaker always uses that form. When the activity is clear, answers can repeat the activity and marker, as in ทำเป็น or ทำไม่เป็น, or use เป็น and ไม่เป็น alone. Include enough of the predicate to make the answer clear.
4. Skill And Other Kinds Of Ability
The linked Three Ways To Say Can lesson compares three markers, without claiming that they exhaust every way Thai expresses ability:
- เป็น focuses on knowing how to do the activity.
- ได้ can express ability, possibility, or permission after an activity phrase.
- ไหว concerns being able to manage the physical or mental demand.
A learned activity can be described with either เป็น or ได้ in a suitable context: พูดภาษาไทยได้ expresses ability to speak Thai, while เป็น focuses on know-how. Knowing how to swim, ว่ายน้ำเป็น, does not guarantee being able to swim now, ว่ายน้ำไม่ได้. The hurt-leg task supplies that situational restriction. Read ได้ in its complete construction rather than replacing it wherever English uses 'can'. For seeing, hearing, or smelling, do not infer a rule just from whether a sense is innate: distinguish practical possibility from knowing how to perform or evaluate a particular activity.
5. Read The Activity In Context
Read กินเป็น and ดูเป็น as activity phrases whose intended know-how depends on context. The first is not a general statement that someone likes spicy food or durian, and the second does not by itself identify an amulet, a used car, or every kind of visual judgment. Knowing how to do an activity also differs from doing it well, as ฉันทำอาหารเป็นแต่ไม่เก่ง shows.
Examples (4)
- ฉันว่ายน้ำเป็น
I can swim.
Word by Word: I swim know-how
Used to show that swimming is a skill the speaker has learned.
- เขาขับรถไม่เป็น
He can't drive.
Word by Word: He drive car not know-how
Notice that ไม่ (not) is placed right before เป็น, not before the verb ขับ (drive).
- คุณพูดภาษาไทยเป็นไหม
Can you speak Thai?
Word by Word: You speak language Thai know-how question-particle
Asking if someone possesses the acquired skill of speaking Thai.
- ฉันทำอาหารเป็นแต่ไม่เก่ง
I know how to cook, but not well.
Word by Word: I make food know-how but not good-at
เป็น expresses knowing how to cook, while แต่ไม่เก่ง says the speaker is not good at it. Basic know-how does not imply high skill.
Common Mistakes
Putting the negative word ไม่ before the main verb.
ฉันไม่ว่ายน้ำเป็นฉันว่ายน้ำไม่เป็นFor the intended meaning that the speaker does not know how to swim, change ฉันไม่ว่ายน้ำเป็น to ฉันว่ายน้ำไม่เป็น. Put ไม่ directly before เป็น in this skill construction; ordinary negation before the swimming verb does not itself express the same lack-of-skill reading.
Using เป็น for situational inability instead of lack of skill.
วันนี้ฉันว่ายน้ำไม่เป็น เพราะเจ็บขาวันนี้ฉันว่ายน้ำไม่ได้ เพราะเจ็บขาได้ and เป็น can both describe ability in a learned activity, as in พูดภาษาไทยได้. But ไม่เป็น denies know-how; it does not simply mean that an otherwise skilled person cannot act right now, nor that the person never learned the skill. For this task, the hurt leg supplies a situational reason, so replace ว่ายน้ำไม่เป็น with ว่ายน้ำไม่ได้ and use ไม่ได้.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'pen' as a marker for learned skills, you first need to be familiar with the basic verb 'pen' (to be) and the standard Thai word order. Knowing how to express general ability with 'dai' also helps clarify when to use 'pen' for specific skills like swimming or speaking a language.
- เป็นTo Be Someone or Something
Understanding the basic verb 'to be' (pen) is essential as this pattern uses the same word to express a learned ability or skill.
Level 1 - ได้ (ความสามารถ)Can — After the Verb
It is helpful to distinguish 'pen' (learned skill) from 'dai' (general physical ability or permission) to correctly use the pattern.

- ไหวAble to Manage It
Another word for 'can', but ไหว focuses on physical or mental stamina and endurance rather than acquired know-how.

Level 2 - ไม่Not
In the skill construction shown here, place ไม่ directly before เป็น to deny knowing how to do the activity. Compare that with ordinary negation of an action.
