ดีไหม

Shall We

Level 3

Proposed Action + ดีไหม
Ask whether the action sounds good: shall we, should I, or would that be a good idea? The whole phrase supplies the intended subject and situation.

How It Works

Propose An Action
In ไปกินข้าวกันดีไหม, the speaker proposes going to eat together. กัน contributes the together meaning. No subject is written; the natural English translation supplies we from this invitation context.

Choose Or Pause
ซื้อสีแดงดีไหมครับ asks whether buying the red one is a good idea. The context determines who would buy it; I in the English translation is supplied rather than written in Thai. ครับ is the polite ending in this example.
พักก่อนดีไหมคะ proposes taking a rest first. ก่อน places resting before the activity that follows in context, and คะ is the polite question ending here. The polite endings follow ดีไหม in these two questions.

Arrange A Meeting
เจอกันพรุ่งนี้ดีไหม proposes meeting tomorrow and asks whether that plan sounds good. กัน conveys meeting one another and พรุ่งนี้ supplies tomorrow.

Compare Questions By Their Goal
For the intended question you are going, right?, choose คุณไปใช่ไหม. คุณไปดีไหม instead asks whether your going is a good idea in a suitable context. Both phrases can form meaningful questions; this exercise compares confirmation with a proposal.
Read the separate entries for ไหม, มั้ย, ใช่ไหม, ดีกว่า, กันเถอะ and ควร in their own contexts. The situation helps determine which question and response express what you mean.

Examples (4)

  1. ไปกินข้าวกันดีไหม

    Shall we go eat together?

Word by Word: go | eat a meal | together | good | question particle

This proposes eating together. กัน contributes together; we is supplied from the invitation context rather than an explicit written pronoun.

  2. ซื้อสีแดงดีไหมครับ

Should I buy the red one?

Word by Word: buy | color | red | good | question particle | polite ending

The question asks for an opinion on buying the red one. ครับ is its polite ending. The Thai sentence leaves the buyer understood from context.

  3. พักก่อนดีไหมคะ

Should we take a rest first?

Word by Word: rest | first | good | question particle | polite question ending

พักก่อน proposes resting first. The question asks whether that is a good idea, and คะ is the polite question ending. We is supplied in the natural translation.

  4. เจอกันพรุ่งนี้ดีไหม

Would meeting tomorrow be a good idea?

Word by Word: meet | one another | tomorrow | good | question particle

This proposes meeting tomorrow, rather than merely checking an already established meeting. Context identifies the people who would meet.

Common Mistakes

  • Confirm Going Or Propose It

    คุณไปดีไหม
    คุณไปใช่ไหม

For the intended meaning you are going, right?, choose คุณไปใช่ไหม. In a proposal context, คุณไปดีไหม can ask whether your going would be a good idea. The alternative is not inherently ungrammatical; the exercise compares the intended meanings of the two exact questions.
