เพิ่ง
Recent Actions and Not Yet
The arrival, eating, and seeing examples select recent events. อย่าเพิ่งไปนะ requests not going yet, while เราเพิ่งจะเริ่มประชุม selects the beginning of a meeting. Read each complete phrase rather than applying one past-time translation to all of them.
How It Works
Read The Five Examples
ผมเพิ่งมาถึงครับ selects a recent arrival, with ครับ represented as a particle. เขาเพิ่งกินข้าวเสร็จ selects recently finishing a meal; กินข้าว is translated functionally as eating, while the segmented literal retains rice. อย่าเพิ่งไปนะ is a whole negative instruction, “Don’t go yet,” rather than a statement that someone recently did not go. เราเพิ่งจะเริ่มประชุม selects only just beginning the meeting; the displayed we reading does not identify the group or require a future-only translation of จะ. เมื่อกี้ฉันเพิ่งเห็นเขา explicitly supplies a moment-ago time phrase, with he/him chosen in the displayed interpretation.
Read The Requested Tasks
The first task requests ผมเพิ่งมาถึง, with เพิ่ง before มาถึง. The second requests มีแค่หนึ่งอัน for “only one item,” using แค่; it does not make the meanings of every English just interchangeable. The third requests the separate time phrase เมื่อกี้ before ผมกินข้าว. Read the exact alternatives and their requested meanings without turning them into universal rules for every possible subject order or elliptical reply.
Compare Complete Linked Constructions
Compare จะ, เคย, and ได้ in their own full clauses, and read the linked serial verb construction as a whole. In the eating example, เสร็จ contributes finishing. The retained เพิ่งจะ construction contains จะ; it does not guarantee a complaint or future event. Compare เพิ่งเคย with เคย in an explicitly stated experience context, without assuming a first-ever event in every use. The instruction retains อย่า. Other displayed comparisons with ทำไม or เอง require the whole utterance rather than a fixed frustration, surprise, or rhythm claim.
Negation And Scope
Compare ไม่ in its linked contexts and ยังไม่ for the displayed not-yet comparison. ไม่ได้เพิ่ง can contrast recently doing something with doing it earlier; it is not the same statement as not doing it yet. Read เพิ่งได้ with ได้ in a stated opportunity or event context rather than guaranteeing a newly gained chance. Compare แล้ว in its own completion or change-of-state clauses; the separate linked แล้ว reference does not establish a global prohibition against combining it with เพิ่ง.
Evidence And Limits
The selected NIU entries define เพิ่ง and เพิ่งจะ in terms of just or just now and supply complete arrival and going-out examples. They support those written recency contexts, not a Royal dictionary attribution, spelling equivalence, pronunciation, frequency, social tone, a fixed interval, or an exhaustive placement rule.
Examples (5)
- ผมเพิ่งมาถึงครับ
I just arrived.
Word by Word: I | just | come-arrive | [particle]
เพิ่ง precedes มาถึง in this complete recent-arrival statement. ครับ is represented as a particle, without using the written form as proof of the speaker’s identity or recorded tone.
- เขาเพิ่งกินข้าวเสร็จ
He just finished eating.
Word by Word: he | just | eat | rice | finish
The displayed reading selects he and recently finishing a meal. กินข้าว is eating functionally, while the segmented literal retains ข้าว as rice. เสร็จ supplies completion within the whole phrase.
- อย่าเพิ่งไปนะ
Don’t go yet.
Word by Word: do not | yet | go | [particle]
Read อย่าเพิ่ง as a whole not-yet instruction in อย่าเพิ่งไปนะ. นะ is represented as a particle; the writing alone does not establish softness, authority, or a completed past action.
- เราเพิ่งจะเริ่มประชุม
We have only just started the meeting.
Word by Word: we | only just | prospective marker | start | meeting
The displayed interpretation selects just beginning the meeting. The English “we” and เรา alone do not identify who belongs to the speaker’s group. The whole เพิ่งจะ construction is not rendered as a guarantee of a future-only event or the absolute earliest possible stage.
- เมื่อกี้ฉันเพิ่งเห็นเขา
I just saw him a moment ago.
Word by Word: a moment ago | I | just | see | him
เมื่อกี้ is the explicit moment-ago phrase in this sentence, and the displayed interpretation selects him for เขา. The example does not measure frequency or a fixed number of elapsed moments.
Common Mistakes
Not giving the requested recent-arrival construction.
ผมมาถึงเพิ่งผมเพิ่งมาถึงThe task requests ผมเพิ่งมาถึง, with เพิ่ง before มาถึง. ผมมาถึงเพิ่ง does not supply that requested construction. This task does not establish every possible order in a longer clause or an elliptical response.
Choosing a recent-time marker for the requested quantity limitation.
มีเพิ่งหนึ่งอันมีแค่หนึ่งอันThis task requests มีแค่หนึ่งอัน for only one item, with แค่. Compare เท่านั้น in its own complete limiting contexts; มีเพิ่งหนึ่งอัน does not give the requested quantity construction.
Not giving the requested separate moment-ago phrase.
เพิ่ง ผมกินข้าวเมื่อกี้ผมกินข้าวThe task requests เมื่อกี้ผมกินข้าว, beginning with the separate moment-ago expression เมื่อกี้. เพิ่ง ผมกินข้าว does not supply that requested wording. This comparison does not ban every context-dependent fragment or alternative subject placement.
Related Patterns
- แล้วAlready Done
Compare แล้ว in its own complete completion or change-of-state clauses, without a global incompatibility claim.
Level 1 - ยังไม่Not Yet
Compare the complete ยังไม่ not-yet statements; they are not the same scope as recently doing an action.
Level 1 - จะFuture and Intention
Read the complete เพิ่งจะ meeting construction rather than assuming every จะ forces a future-only event.
Level 1 - อย่าDo Not
The native instruction อย่าเพิ่งไปนะ selects not going yet; read the complete negative instruction.
Level 1 - แค่Just and Only
The quantity task requests แค่ for only one item, without measuring learner confusion or treating every just as equivalent.
