เอง
Oneself
Compare ทำเอง (do it oneself), ผมเอง (me/myself), and ห้าบาทเอง (only five baht). Read the complete context instead of assuming every เอง means no help or physical solitude.
How It Works
1. Doing It Oneself
In ผมทำเอง (I did it myself), เอง emphasizes the speaker’s own performance. This does not necessarily mean the speaker was physically alone or had no resources or assistance at any stage. Compare the requested eating example เขากินเอง with เขากินคนเดียว, which instead says he eats alone.
2. Identifying the Person
In ใครครับ? ผมเองครับ (Who is it? It’s me), เอง follows the pronoun to identify the speaker. In กับข้าวนี้แม่ทำเอง, it emphasizes that Mom prepared this food.
3. Only That Much
In ห้าบาทเอง (Only five baht), เอง presents the amount as “only” that much. Whether the price is cheap depends on the item and context; the phrase does not prove an objective price judgment.
4. Happening By Itself
ไฟดับเอง describes the light going out by itself. It does not name an automatic mechanism or establish that no one touched anything. เขารู้เอง presents him as finding out for himself; the words do not specify every source of his knowledge.
5. Keep the Construction Distinct
For the requested “I did it myself” construction, use ผมทำเอง. In ผมทำตัวเอง, ตัวเอง is a reflexive object, rather than the displayed intensive use of เอง. The fragment alone does not establish self-harm or trouble. Compare the expression ด้วยตัวเอง, “by oneself”; these comparisons do not impose a formal-only or standard-choice rule.
Examples (6)
- ผมทำเอง
I did it myself.
Word by Word: I do myself
เอง emphasizes that the speaker performed the action himself. It does not state whether other people were present or whether he used outside resources.
- ใครครับ? ผมเองครับ
Who is it? It's me.
Word by Word: Who [polite]? I myself [polite]
Used after a pronoun to identify the speaker.
- ห้าบาทเอง
It's only five baht.
Word by Word: Five baht only
After the quantity, เอง presents it as “only” five baht. Whether that is cheap depends on context.
- ไฟดับเอง
The light turned off by itself.
Word by Word: Light extinguish itself
This describes the light going out by itself, without naming the cause or an automatic mechanism.
- เขารู้เอง
He found out by himself.
Word by Word: He know himself
เอง presents him as finding out for himself. The sentence does not specify the full circumstances or sources of his knowledge.
- กับข้าวนี้แม่ทำเอง
Mom cooked this food herself.
Word by Word: Food this mother do herself
Emphasizes that the mother was the one who prepared the meal.
Common Mistakes
Using a reflexive object instead of the requested own-performance form.
ผมทำตัวเองผมทำเองFor the requested “I did it myself” construction, use ผมทำเอง. In ผมทำตัวเอง, ตัวเอง occupies the reflexive-object role and does not supply that displayed form. The fragment alone does not prove self-harm or trouble.
Using the alone reading instead of the requested own-performance reading.
เขากินคนเดียวเขากินเองThe task requests เขากินเอง, emphasizing his own performance of eating. เขากินคนเดียว says he eats alone and is a grammatical alternative for that different meaning. Neither sentence by itself specifies a table or every circumstance of feeding.
