ได้ (โอกาส)

Got to Do It

Level 1

ได้ (dâai) + Verb
Used for 'get to' or 'got to' do something, or for an event presented as realized in context.

How It Works

Thai verbs do not change their form to mark tense. A time expression or the surrounding context can locate an event in the past without an added marker. ได้ (dâai) has a different role when placed before the verb:

  • Getting to Do Something: This position can give a 'get to' or 'got to' reading, including having an opportunity. In 'I got to meet him yesterday,' the time expression locates the meeting in the past. The marker does not by itself mean that every event was difficult or remarkable.
  • Realized Events: In a past context, it can present an event as having occurred. It is not required in every past-tense English translation, and its position alone does not establish the event's time.
  • Negation: Before a verb, ไม่ได้ (mâi dâai) can deny that an action occurred or that someone got to do it. The whole sentence establishes the time and intended reading. Compare ไม่ (mâi) in the full negative construction; this is not a rule reserving one form for all specific past events and the other for all past habits or states.
  • Future Opportunity: With จะ (jà), the construction can express 'will get to' (เช่น จะได้ไป - will get to go). The future reading comes from this combination and context, rather than a compulsory past meaning of the marker.

Position and Context: Compare the marker before a verb with its position after a verb phrase for a 'can' reading. Use that position and the complete sentence to distinguish the constructions; do not use a supposed fixed short-versus-long vowel contrast as the grammatical rule.

Examples (4)

  1. ฉันได้เจอเขาเมื่อวานนี้

I got to meet him yesterday.

Word by Word: I [got to] meet him yesterday this

Using ได้ before 'meet' (เจอ) presents this meeting as something the speaker got to do. The word for yesterday establishes its past time; this does not imply that the meeting involved a struggle.

  2. ดีใจที่ได้รู้จักครับ

Glad to get to know you.

Word by Word: Glad that [got to] know [polite]

Here ได้ contributes the 'get to know' reading in an expression of pleasure at making someone's acquaintance. This is not a claim that every acquaintance is an achievement or that the phrase fits every social setting.

  3. ปีที่แล้วผมไม่ได้ไปเมืองไทย

Last year I didn't go to Thailand.

Word by Word: Year that past I not [did] go country Thai

The phrase 'last year' supplies the past time. In this sentence, 'mâi dâi' before 'go' (ไป) denies that the trip occurred; it is not an obligatory marker for every negative statement about the past.

  4. พรุ่งนี้จะได้กินอาหารญี่ปุ่น

Tomorrow (we) will get to eat Japanese food.

Word by Word: Tomorrow will [get to] eat food Japanese

With 'jà' and the word for tomorrow, this sentence presents a future opportunity to eat the food. The English 'we' is inferred from context because the Thai sentence does not name a subject.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing the position of ได้ (before vs. after the verb).

    ผมไปได้
    ผมได้ไป

This exercise asks for the 'got to go' reading. ได้ before the verb gives that construction, while ได้ after the verb gives a 'can go' reading in an appropriate context. Both strings can be well formed; they answer different intended meanings here.

  • Using ได้ to translate 'was' or 'were' for past states.

    ผมได้เป็นนักเรียน
    เมื่อก่อนผมเป็นนักเรียน

The exercise asks for a neutral statement that the speaker was a student before, rather than that they got to take on that role. ได้ is not a translation of every English 'was' or 'were'. Use เป็น with the displayed past-time expression for the requested identity statement. The first string can have a contextual 'got to be a student' reading, so there is no categorical ban on placing ได้ before a role or identity expression.
