Verb + ออก
Outward Movement and Figuring It Out
The examples show several uses of ออก. In เอาเสื้อตัวนี้ออกไป it contributes outward direction; in คิดออก it contributes a figuring-out reading. ออกดอก has ออก before the noun ดอก, so it is not an example of the same verb-following order.
How It Works
1. Figuring Out and Recalling
คิดออก can mean figuring something out, as in คิดออกแล้ว!. The translation interprets the unstated subject as the speaker. In ฉันนึกชื่อเขาไม่ออก, the complete phrase นึกชื่อเขา is followed by ไม่ออก: the speaker cannot recall his name. The object can therefore intervene between the main verb and the negative result expression.
2. Movement and Removal
เอาเสื้อตัวนี้ออกไป asks for this shirt to be taken out, with ออกไป expressing outward movement. ถอดรองเท้าออกก่อน requests shoe removal first. Neither sentence alone specifies the original enclosure or proves that every removal has already been completed.
3. Flowering
ต้นไม้กำลังออกดอก describes a tree producing flowers, with กำลัง marking the ongoing activity. Here ออกดอก is a complete expression with ออก preceding ดอก. Do not force this noun-following construction into the verb-plus-direction pattern.
4. Emphasizing a Quality
In หนังเรื่องนี้สนุกออก, ออก adds emphasis to the assessment that this movie is fun. It can counter a different assessment in a suitable conversation, but another person’s prior opinion is not stated in the sentence itself.
5. Reading the Negative Pattern
The linked ไม่ occurs in ไม่ออก after the verb phrase in the recall example. อ่านไม่ออก can express inability to make out writing. The first exercise requests that construction for bad handwriting. อ่านไม่ได้ can also express inability in context; it is not restricted to prohibition or missing equipment.
6. The Realization Exercise
The second exercise requests ฉันคิดได้ว่าฉันทำผิด to express realizing that the speaker did something wrong. The alternative with คิดออก does not reproduce the requested คิดได้ construction. This task does not divide all thinking into puzzle-solving versus moral realizations or declare that the alternative can never be meaningful.
Examples (6)
- คิดออกแล้ว!
[I] have figured it out!
Word by Word: think [figure out] already
คิดออก gives the figuring-out reading and แล้ว contributes “already.” The subject is unstated and supplied as [I] here; the sentence does not require a sudden realization.
- ฉันนึกชื่อเขาไม่ออก
I can't recall his name.
Word by Word: I recall name him not [achieve recall]
The object ชื่อเขา occurs inside the verb phrase before ไม่ออก. The complete construction expresses inability to recall his name.
- เอาเสื้อตัวนี้ออกไป
Take this shirt out.
Word by Word: take shirt classifier this out go
ออกไป contributes outward direction to taking this shirt out. The sentence does not specify an enclosed starting place.
- ต้นไม้กำลังออกดอก
The tree is blooming (producing flowers).
Word by Word: tree [ongoing] produce flowers
กำลัง marks the ongoing activity. ออกดอก means producing flowers here, with ออก preceding the noun ดอก.
- หนังเรื่องนี้สนุกออก
This movie is actually quite fun!
Word by Word: movie story this fun [emphatic]
ออก adds emphasis to the movie’s fun quality in this statement. A disagreement reading depends on the surrounding conversation.
- ถอดรองเท้าออกก่อน
Take the shoes off first.
Word by Word: take-off shoes [remove] before
ถอดรองเท้าออก requests shoe removal, and ก่อน gives the first/before ordering. The owner of the shoes is not named.
Common Mistakes
Not using the requested อ่านไม่ออก construction for illegible handwriting.
ผมอ่านไม่ได้ เพราะลายมือแย่ผมอ่านไม่ออก เพราะลายมือแย่This exercise specifically requests อ่านไม่ออก to describe not being able to make out the bad handwriting. อ่านไม่ได้ does not reproduce that construction, although it can also express inability to read in context. It does not always mean a prohibition or lack of glasses.
Not using the requested คิดได้ realization construction.
ฉันคิดออกว่าฉันทำผิดฉันคิดได้ว่าฉันทำผิดThe task requests ฉันคิดได้ว่าฉันทำผิด, “I realized that I did something wrong.” The alternative with คิดออก uses a different construction. This task does not make คิดได้ exclusive to moral realizations or คิดออก exclusive to puzzles.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'Verb + ออก', you first need to be comfortable with Thai serial verbs, where two or more verbs are placed together without conjunctions. Specifically, you should understand how directional verbs (like 'go', 'come', or 'in') are placed after a main verb to indicate the direction or result of an action.
- Verb + ไป / มาDirection After the Verb
Understanding how directional verbs like 'go' and 'come' function as post-verb modifiers provides the conceptual framework for other directional modifiers like 'out'.
Level 1 - Verb + เข้าInward
Understanding the 'inward' directional modifier is the direct logical counterpart to the 'outward' modifier 'ออก'.
