Verb + เข้า

Inward

Level 2

เข้า can indicate inward movement, as in เดินเข้าห้อง ('walk into the room'). Other constructions express attending a meeting, matching, encouragement, an unexpected event, or increasing intensity. Learn each pattern in its full context.

How It Works

เข้า in Different Constructions
เข้า (khâo) means 'enter' and has a falling tone. Its meaning depends on the whole construction.

1. Inward Movement
After a motion verb, เข้า gives the inward direction. In เดินเข้าห้อง, เดิน means 'walk', เข้า means 'enter', and ห้อง is 'room': 'walk into the room'. This is a serial verb construction. เข้า can also be the main verb, as in เข้าห้อง ('enter the room').

2. Attending an Activity
In เข้าประชุม, เข้า comes before ประชุม and means attending a meeting. The example พรุ่งนี้ฉันต้องเข้าประชุมแต่เช้า means 'Tomorrow I have to attend a meeting early in the morning'. Compare the position of เข้า here with its position after เดิน above; not every use follows one Verb + เข้า order.

3. Matching and Getting Along
เข้ากับ can mean 'match' or 'suit', as in เสื้อตัวนี้เข้ากับกางเกง ('This shirt matches the pants'). เข้ากัน can mean 'fit together' or 'get along'. Learn these combinations with กับ and กัน; this sense describes a relationship, rather than inward movement.

4. Urging an Action
เร็วเข้า urges someone to hurry. In กินเข้าไป! จะได้โตไวๆ, กินเข้าไป encourages the listener to eat or keep eating: 'Go on, eat! So you can grow up fast'. It does not by itself mean eating quickly or finishing every bit of food. To specify the speed of eating, กินเร็วๆ says 'eat quickly'. These expressions are different; do not treat เข้า as a general command ending that supplies the same meaning with every verb.

5. An Unexpected Event
In ระวังเดินชนเข้าล่ะ, the speaker warns someone about walking into a collision: 'Be careful not to bump into it as you walk'. Here, ชนเข้า contributes the unexpected or unwanted event reading. This example does not mean that every perception or action verb followed by เข้า must describe an accident or a negative event.

6. Progression and Intensity
In ฝนตกหนักเข้าทุกที, หนักเข้า describes the rain becoming heavier: 'The rain is getting heavier and heavier'. The phrase หนักเข้า can describe something becoming heavier or worse; rain comes from the full example, not from หนักเข้า alone. นานเข้า describes a progression as time goes on.

7. Learn Whole Expressions
เข้าใจ means 'understand', เข้าข้าง means 'take someone's side', and เข้าที่ can mean 'in place' or 'settled'. Learn their established meanings as whole expressions. Do not infer their meaning by applying the inward-motion pattern mechanically to every word.

Examples (6)

  1. เดินเข้าห้อง

    Walk into the room.

Word by Word: walk + enter + room

A simple directional use showing the path of walking leads into the room.

  2. พรุ่งนี้ฉันต้องเข้าประชุมแต่เช้า

Tomorrow I have to attend a meeting early in the morning.

    Word by Word: tomorrow + I + must + enter + meeting + since + morning

Here, 'เข้า' is used before an activity to mean attending or starting an event, such as a meeting.

  3. เสื้อตัวนี้เข้ากับกางเกง

    This shirt matches the pants.

Word by Word: shirt + [classifier] + this + match + with + pants

Here 'เข้า' is used to describe how two items of clothing match or suit each other aesthetically.

  4. กินเข้าไป! จะได้โตไวๆ

Go on, eat! So you can grow up fast.

Word by Word: eat + enter + go + will + get + grow + fast + [repetition]

In this example, กินเข้าไป encourages the listener to eat or keep eating. It does not itself specify eating speed or require finishing all the food.

  5. ระวังเดินชนเข้าล่ะ

Be careful not to bump into it as you walk.

Word by Word: careful + walk + bump + enter + [particle]

In this warning, ชนเข้า presents a possible unexpected or unwanted collision while walking. The reading comes from the whole warning, rather than a rule that every Verb + เข้า event is accidental.

  6. ฝนตกหนักเข้าทุกที

The rain is getting heavier and heavier.

Word by Word: rain + fall + heavy + enter + every + time

When used with an adjective or adverb of degree like 'หนัก' (heavy), 'เข้า' shows an increase in intensity.

Common Mistakes

  • Using เข้าเสื้อ for the intended meaning 'put on a shirt'.

    เข้าเสื้อ
    ใส่เสื้อ

For the intended meaning 'put on a shirt', use ใส่เสื้อ. เข้าเสื้อ does not express that clothing action here. Do not apply the English idea of going 'into' clothes to select the Thai verb.

  • Using กินเข้า when you intend to specify eating quickly.

    กินเข้า
    กินเร็วๆ

To specify eating speed, use กินเร็วๆ ('eat quickly'). กินเข้า alone does not supply that same explicit speed meaning. กินเข้าไป can instead encourage eating or continuing to eat, as in the native example; it does not itself say 'quickly' or 'finish everything'. This comparison is about the intended speed reading, not a claim that every use of กินเข้า is impossible or that ไป is universally compulsory.
