Verb + ไม่ + Result
Cannot Reach the Result
These sentences describe not finding, not figuring something out, not keeping up while listening, not falling asleep, or not finishing all the food. They do not by themselves prove an ongoing attempt or a particular cause.
How It Works
The Five Phrases
หาไม่เจอ means “cannot find”; หา is searching or looking for something, not simply seeing. คิดไม่ออก is represented as “cannot figure something out”, rather than a physical thought moving out. ฟังไม่ทัน means “cannot keep up” in a listening context. นอนไม่หลับ means “cannot fall asleep”. กินไม่หมด means “cannot finish eating all of it”. The last example does not write a subject or object, so the translation marks those inferred participants.
What Is Not Stated
The bare phrases do not specify whether an attempt is happening now, how much effort has been made, or why the outcome is unavailable. Fast speech, too much food, a physical obstacle, or trouble remembering could belong to a particular context, but none is guaranteed by these five sentences. The sleep example does not verify that someone is presently lying down or establish a medical condition.
Compare Complete Constructions
Compare หาเจอ with หาไม่เจอ in its own finding context. Removing ไม่ does not by itself establish past tense or that every positive phrase describes an already completed event. Compare Verb + ไม่ได้ and ได้ in their full linked examples; these links do not make every ไม่ได้ clause a permission statement or define ได้ universally as “successfully achieved”.
The Two Tasks
The first task requests หาไม่เจอ for “cannot find”. Keep ไม่ in that exact phrase rather than replacing it with ไม่หาเจอ; this task does not establish the placement of negation in every Thai verb phrase. The second requests นอนไม่หลับ for “cannot fall asleep”. นอนไม่ได้ can have a meaningful inability or restriction reading in another context; it is not limited to a broken bed or universally unsuitable for talking about sleep.
Research Scope
The NIU dictionary has a selected คิดไม่ออก entry for inability to reach a conclusion, a คิดออก entry with a complete figuring-out example, and a คืนนั้น example using นอนไม่หลับ. These are narrow lexical and sentence witnesses, not evidence of frequency, a universal compound taxonomy, ongoing effort, or audio pronunciation.
Examples (5)
- ฉันหาไม่เจอ
I cannot find [it].
Word by Word: I | search | not | find
หา is searching or looking for something, and หาไม่เจอ expresses not being able to find it. The object [it] is inferred; the sentence does not state how long someone searched or whether the search is happening now.
- เขาคิดไม่ออก
He cannot figure [it] out.
Word by Word: he | think | not | figure out
คิดไม่ออก is represented functionally as inability to figure something out. [It] is inferred, and “he” is the selected participant reading of เขา. The phrase does not by itself establish memory loss, effort, or a physical idea moving out.
- ผมฟังไม่ทัน
I cannot keep up [with what is being said].
Word by Word: I | listen | not | keep up
ฟัง is listening and ทัน is represented functionally as keeping up in this phrase. The bracketed material supplies a listening context. Speech speed could explain a particular use, but the sentence alone does not establish that cause.
- เขานอนไม่หลับ
He cannot fall asleep.
Word by Word: he | sleep | not | fall asleep
นอนไม่หลับ expresses inability to fall asleep. “He” is the chosen reading of เขา; the sentence does not prove that he is already lying down or identify the cause of the sleep difficulty.
- กินไม่หมด
[I] cannot finish eating [all of it].
Word by Word: eat | not | finish all
กินไม่หมด expresses not being able to finish eating all of it. The subject and object are inferred and marked in brackets. The phrase does not specify the amount of food, the cause, or whether eating has already begun.
Common Mistakes
Changing the requested หาไม่เจอ phrase to ไม่หาเจอ.
ไม่หาเจอหาไม่เจอFor the task asking for “cannot find”, retain หาไม่เจอ with ไม่ between หา and เจอ. The pair contrasts that exact requested response with ไม่หาเจอ; it does not prove a universal negation-placement rule for all verb phrases.
Replacing the requested “cannot fall asleep” phrase with นอนไม่ได้.
นอนไม่ได้นอนไม่หลับFor the specific “cannot fall asleep” task, retain นอนไม่หลับ. นอนไม่ได้ can express another inability or restriction in a suitable context, including a context about sleep; the pair does not limit it to inability to lie down because of a broken bed or make every ไม่ได้ construction a permission statement.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'Verb + ไม่ + Result', you first need to know how to negate a simple verb with 'ไม่'. You also need to understand the Thai resultative verb structure, where a second verb (like 'found' or 'heard') is placed after the main action verb to show the outcome. This pattern simply inserts the negation between those two components to show the result was not achieved.
