ไม่ได้ + Verb

Denying an Event or Assumption

Level 3

Read ไม่ได้ together with the predicate and context. The examples deny going, intending, telling and ordering, or reject assumptions about liking and expense.

How It Works

Use The Time In The Sentence
เมื่อวานนี้ means yesterday in the first example. Translate that sentence as a past denial. The form ไม่ได้ alone does not supply a universal past-tense rule.

Read The Denied Predicate
ไม่ได้ตั้งใจ denies intending an action; ไม่ได้บอก denies telling; ไม่ได้สั่ง denies ordering. In the other examples, ไม่ได้ชอบ and ไม่ได้แพง reject assumptions about liking and expense. The full clause determines the translation.

Compare The Requested Meaning
For the exercise meaning I did not go, choose ผมไม่ได้ไป. ผมไปไม่ได้ expresses inability to go and answers a different question. Both are possible Thai sentences; the task concerns their meaning.

Keep The Context
Thai research on disclaimers studies ไม่ได้ before a predicate outside simple past-event reports. Do not infer that it is always past, always inability, or forbidden with a whole class of sensory or cognitive verbs. The original habitual-food comparison is removed from binary practice because no context establishes its universal incorrectness. This lesson makes no claims about vowel shortening frequency or the correctness of a bare reply.

Examples (6)

  1. เมื่อวานนี้ผมไม่ได้ไปทำงาน

Yesterday I did not go to work.

Word by Word: yesterday | I | not [event denial] | go | work

เมื่อวานนี้ sets yesterday as the time. ไม่ได้ไป denies the event of going.

  2. ขอโทษครับ ผมไม่ได้ตั้งใจ

I’m sorry; I did not mean to.

Word by Word: sorry | polite particle | I | not [denial] | intend

ไม่ได้ตั้งใจ denies intention, not the ability to intend. The apology does not specify what happened.

  3. เขาไม่ได้บอกฉัน

    They did not tell me.

Word by Word: they [singular] | not [event denial] | tell | me

ไม่ได้บอก denies telling the speaker. เขา does not specify gender here; surrounding context supplies who and when.

  4. ฉันไม่ได้ชอบเขาหรอก

I do not like them, actually.

Word by Word: I | not [denial] | like | them [singular] | หรอก [denial particle]

The clause rejects an assumption that the speaker likes the person. It does not say the speaker is unable to like them.

  5. มันไม่ได้แพงหรอก

    It is not expensive, actually.

Word by Word: it | not [denial] | expensive | หรอก [denial particle]

This denies the expensive predicate. Do not turn it into an ability statement.

  6. ฉันไม่ได้สั่งจานนี้ค่ะ

I did not order this dish.

Word by Word: I | not [event denial] | order | dish | this | polite particle

ไม่ได้สั่ง denies ordering this dish. ค่ะ is a polite ending; it does not change the denied action.

Common Mistakes

  • Choosing Cannot Go For The Requested Did Not Go Meaning

    ผมไปไม่ได้
    ผมไม่ได้ไป

The task asks for I did not go: ผมไม่ได้ไป. ผมไปไม่ได้ means I cannot go and does not match that requested meaning. This comparison does not mark the inability sentence as ungrammatical.
