ไป + Verb

Go and Do It

Level 3

Read ไป + Verb as “go and do” in these examples. The following action is eating, buying things, visiting a doctor, or opening a door. Read time and the point of reference from the whole sentence and situation.

How It Works

1. Read the Displayed Verb Sequence
Compare these examples with serial verb construction examples. ไป precedes the action in ไปกินข้าว and ไปซื้อของ. The displayed order does not insert ที่ between ไป and กิน.

2. Read the Reference and Situation
These sentences use a going reading of ไป. Compare มา + Verb in its own coming context. Interpret the relevant destination and point of reference from the complete situation rather than requiring every going event to start at the speaker's present location.

3. Read the Time Words
พรุ่งนี้ฉันจะไปหาหมอ explicitly includes “tomorrow” and จะ (will). The shopping example contains neither an explicit past marker nor “tomorrow”; its time comes from context. In the doctor example, ไปหา has the visiting or going-to-see reading recorded in the dictionary, rather than requiring a literal search for a missing doctor.

4. Reproduce the Requested Construction
Both exercises request ไปกินข้าว. กินไปข้าว changes the displayed order, while ไปที่กินข้าว inserts ที่. They do not reproduce this requested sequence. Study other placements of ไป in their own complete sentences rather than deriving one automatic meaning from changing the order.

Examples (4)

  1. ไปกินข้าวกันเถอะ

    Let's go eat together.

Word by Word: go eat rice together [particle]

กันเถอะ makes this a shared-action suggestion: “Let's go eat together.” The example does not establish a fixed formality level or frequency.

  2. เขาไปซื้อของที่ตลาด

He goes to buy things at the market.

Word by Word: he go buy things at market

Shows the purpose (buying things) following the motion (going).

  3. พรุ่งนี้ฉันจะไปหาหมอ

Tomorrow I will go see the doctor.

Word by Word: tomorrow I will go find doctor

The sentence explicitly combines tomorrow and จะ (will) with ไปหา. Here ไปหาหมอ means going to see or consult a doctor; it need not mean searching for a missing person.

  4. ไปเปิดประตูให้หน่อย

Go open the door for [me], please.

Word by Word: go | open door | [benefactive] | [request particle]

The displayed request has ให้หน่อย but does not write ช่วย. Compare the separate ช่วย + Verb + หน่อย request pattern without inserting that word into this native sentence. The beneficiary translated as [me] is inferred from context; the expression alone does not guarantee politeness.

Common Mistakes

  • Changing the order when the exercise requests ไปกินข้าว.

    กินไปข้าว
    ไปกินข้าว

Reproduce ไปกินข้าว, with ไป before กินข้าว. กินไปข้าว does not reproduce this requested order. Other constructions containing ไป after a verb must be interpreted as complete expressions, not assigned one automatic directional or continuation meaning by this exercise.

  • Inserting ที่ when the exercise requests the displayed ไปกินข้าว sequence.

    ไปที่กินข้าว
    ไปกินข้าว

Reproduce ไปกินข้าว without inserting ที่ between the displayed verbs. ไปที่กินข้าว does not reproduce this task's requested sequence. This exercise does not prohibit ที่ in other location or clause constructions.

Learn This First

To understand the 'ไป + Verb' pattern, you first need to know the basic verb 'ไป' (to go). Since Thai often strings verbs together without words like 'to' or 'and', understanding basic serial verb logic and standard word order is essential for correctly expressing the intention of going somewhere to perform an action.
