แหละ
Emphasis with แหละ
แหละ adds emphasis. In these examples it follows pointing words such as นี่ or นี้, or a statement. Its English equivalent depends on the complete utterance.
How It Works
1. Identifying a choice
In นี่แหละที่ฉันอยากได้, แหละ emphasizes the item identified by นี่. The linked นี้ entry teaches the corresponding noun-modifying pointing words; keep the two sets distinct. In นั่นแหละ! ทำแบบนั้นเลย, the speaker confirms the demonstrated way of doing something.
2. Building the rest of the statement
The ที่ clause in the first example specifies what the speaker wants. The linked คือ construction introduces an identification or definition; it has its own grammatical role. Neither link makes แหละ a replacement for the rest of the clause.
3. Acknowledging a point and making a prediction
In เขาก็เก่งแหละ แต่ฉันไม่ชอบเขา, ก็ participates in acknowledging that he is capable before the contrasting statement. In เขาคงรู้แล้วแหละ, คง conveys probability and แล้ว contributes the already-known reading. แหละ adds emphasis; it does not by itself turn a claim into a prediction.
4. Reading the complete utterance
รู้แล้วแหละน่า! can express an emphatic response such as “I already know!” in a suitable context. The subject is unstated, and annoyance depends on the interaction and delivery. In แค่นี้แหละ ขอบคุณครับ, แค่ supplies the limitation “just this,” while แหละ emphasizes it. The linked หรอก entry teaches another particle in its own contexts; do not treat the two as an automatic affirmative/negative switch.
5. Keeping particles distinct
The linked ล่ะ entry includes follow-up-question uses. The first exercise specifically requests that particle in ไปไหนล่ะ. The second exercise requests the exact written departure form ไปละ; ไปล่ะ uses a different particle and is not a universal spelling error. These tasks do not establish a ban on แหละ in every question or on other meaningful departure expressions.
6. Politeness and context
ครับ and ค่ะ are separate polite-particle constructions. The last native example already contains ขอบคุณครับ. Choose an expression appropriate to the speaker and situation; แหละ alone does not guarantee politeness, informality, irritation, or a fixed pronunciation change.
Examples (6)
- นี่แหละที่ฉันอยากได้
This right here is what I want.
Word by Word: this [emphatic] that I want get
Here, the pronoun นี่ identifies the item. นี่แหละ emphasizes that this is what the speaker wants.
- นั่นแหละ! ทำแบบนั้นเลย
Exactly! Do it just like that.
Word by Word: that [emphatic] do like that [particle]
Used as a standalone interjection, นั่นแหละ expresses strong agreement, meaning 'That is exactly it!'
- เขาก็เก่งแหละ แต่ฉันไม่ชอบเขา
He is capable, sure, but I do not like him.
Word by Word: he [particle] capable [emphatic] but I not like he
This shows the concessive pattern using ก็ (acting here as a concessive particle rather than 'then') and แต่. The speaker acknowledges a fact before introducing a counter-point.
- เขาคงรู้แล้วแหละ
He probably already knows.
Word by Word: he probably know already [emphatic]
คง supplies the probability in this statement. แล้ว contributes “already”; แหละ adds emphasis to the complete statement.
- รู้แล้วแหละน่า!
[I] already know [that]!
Word by Word: know already [emphatic] [particle]
This can be an emphatic response to repeated information in context. The translation supplies the unstated subject and object in brackets. Irritation is a possible contextual reading, not a fixed meaning of แหละ.
- แค่นี้แหละ ขอบคุณครับ
That is all, thank you.
Word by Word: just this [emphatic] thank you [polite]
Here, แค่ supplies “just/only,” and แหละ emphasizes the limitation. The following thanks can close this interaction.
Common Mistakes
Using แหละ when the exercise requests a follow-up question with ล่ะ.
ไปไหนแหละไปไหนล่ะFor this task, ask “Where are you going?” with the requested final particle ล่ะ: ไปไหนล่ะ. The alternative with แหละ does not match that requested construction. This is not a claim that แหละ can never occur in a question.
Using a different particle when the task requests the exact written form ไปละ.
ไปล่ะไปละThis spelling task specifically requests ไปละ as the departure expression. ไปล่ะ uses ล่ะ instead and therefore does not reproduce the requested form. It can have a meaningful use in context; this exercise does not label every occurrence of ไปล่ะ a misspelling or establish a pronunciation derivation.
