услед / поводом / посредством + Genitive

Formal Cause Occasion and Means

Level 4Sounds Like usled; povodom; posredstvom + genitiv

The secondary prepositions услед, поводом, and посредством strictly take the genitive case. They belong to formal administrative, legal, and journalistic registers, expressing objective cause ('due to'), occasion/prompt ('on the occasion of / regarding'), and mediation ('via / through the agency of').

How It Works

In contemporary standard Serbian, услед, поводом, and посредством function as secondary (derived) prepositions (неправи / изведени предлози). They are essential components of official statements, media reports, legal contracts, and academic writing.

1. Услед + Genitive (Objective Cause)
• Meaning: 'due to', 'owing to', 'as a result of'.
• Usage: Marks an external, factual, or natural constraint that mechanically triggers an outcome (e.g., weather events, technical malfunctions, illness).
• Distinction: Do not confuse with због (which is neutral and allows internal human motivations like love or spite) or ради (which exclusively expresses purpose or goal). Saying *услед љубави sounds unnaturally mechanical, and using *ради квара for a cause is grammatically incorrect.

2. Поводом + Genitive (Occasion or Prompt)
• Meaning: 'on the occasion of', 'prompted by', 'in connection with'.
• Usage: Originating from the noun повод (occasion, trigger), this fossilized form introduces the milestone, celebration, or official text that serves as the backdrop or stimulus for an action (e.g., holidays, press releases, formal inquiries).
• Unlike услед, it answers 'prompted by what occasion?' rather than 'forced by what physical cause?'.

3. Посредством + Genitive (Agency and Mediation)
• Meaning: 'through the agency of', 'via', 'by means of'.
• Usage: Originating from the noun посредство (mediation), it specifically marks an intermediary agent, third party, broker, legal channel, or platform (e.g., an embassy, an arbitrator, a specialized agency).
• Distinction: It is not used for direct physical instruments (for which Serbian uses the instrumental of means or помоћу). You write with a pen (оловком), but negotiate an agreement via a mediator (посредством посредника).

Syntax & Orthography:
• All three strictly precede the genitive noun phrase (e.g., услед квара, never *квара услед).
• Услед is always written as a single word (never *у след). In Ijekavian standard Serbian, the forms uslijed and usljed are standard.

Examples (5)

  1. Саобраћај је обустављен услед одрона на путу.

Traffic was suspended due to a landslide on the road.

Word by Word: Traffic is suspended due-to landslide on road.

Услед governs the genitive singular 'одрона' to mark an external, natural cause.

  2. Влада је издала саопштење поводом нових економских мера.

The government issued a statement regarding the new economic measures.

Word by Word: Government is issued statement on-occasion-of new economic measures.

Поводом governs the genitive plural phrase 'нових економских мера', indicating the catalyst or topic of the statement.

  3. Спор је решен посредством независног арбитра.

The dispute was resolved through an independent arbitrator.

Word by Word: Dispute is resolved by-means-of independent arbitrator.

Посредством governs the genitive singular 'независног арбитра', highlighting a third-party intermediary.

  4. Пријем је организован поводом Дана државности.

A reception was organized on the occasion of Statehood Day.

Word by Word: Reception is organized on-occasion-of Day of-statehood.

Here 'поводом' clearly specifies the commemorative milestone rather than a direct physical cause.

  5. Документацију можете доставити посредством овлашћеног заступника.

You may submit the documentation via an authorized representative.

Word by Word: Documentation can submit by-agency-of authorized representative.

Illustrates the formal administrative use of посредством to designate an institutional legal conduit.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying the instrumental case to the dependent noun phrase instead of the genitive.

    Договор је постигнут посредством адвокатом.
    Договор је постигнут посредством адвоката.

Learners see the '-ом' ending on 'посредством' and mistakenly match it with the instrumental ending. Both 'посредством' and 'поводом' are prepositions that strictly require the genitive case (адвоката).

  • Writing услед as two separate words.

Лет је отказан у след олује.
    Лет је отказан услед олује.

Although historically derived from the preposition 'u' and noun 'sled', modern standard Serbian fuses this preposition into a single invariant word: 'услед'.

  • Using посредством for ordinary physical tools instead of mediated agency.

    Отворио је сандук посредством чекића.
    Отворио је сандук чекићем.

Посредством requires an intermediary agent, institution, or legal medium. Simple manual tools use the instrumental case without a preposition (чекићем) or помоћу (+ genitive).
