наводно / тобоже / изгледа
Reporting and Distancing a Claim
Use наводно for hearsay ('allegedly'), тобоже for pretense or sham ('ostensibly/under the pretense of'), and изгледа for deductions based on observation ('it seems/apparently').
How It Works
In advanced Serbian discourse, choosing the right evidential adverb or particle establishes your epistemic commitment to a claim.
1. Наводно (Reportative / Hearsay)
• Meaning: 'allegedly', 'reportedly', 'supposedly'.
• Evidential basis: Second-hand accounts, rumors, media reports, or external claims.
• Function: It withholds verification without necessarily asserting falsehood. Common in journalism and formal debates to prevent defamation or premature judgment.
• Syntax: Modifies an entire clause (parenthetically or initially) or an adjective/noun phrase directly (e.g., наводно тачан податак). Corresponding adjective: наводни, -а, -о.
2. Тобоже / Тобож (Simulative / Counterfactual Stance)
• Meaning: 'ostensibly', 'purportedly', 'as if', 'under the pretense of'.
• Evidential basis: Perceived hypocrisy, deceit, or feigned action (симулативно значење).
• Function: The speaker actively distances themselves by signaling disbelief, irony, or unmasking a false front.
• Syntax: Invariable modal particle modifying verbs, clauses, or adjectives. Frequently precedes purpose clauses: тобоже да помогне ('as if to help'). Corresponding adjective: тобожњи, -а, -е.
3. Изгледа / Изгледа да (Perceptual / Inferential)
• Meaning: 'it seems', 'apparently', 'it looks like'.
• Evidential basis: Direct observation, sensory clues, or logical deductions from context.
• Morphosyntax: Unlike uninflected modal particles, изгледа is an inflected 3rd-person singular verb that can shift tenses (e.g., past изгледало је да). It functions either as an impersonal governing verb followed by a clausal complement (Изгледа да + [clause]) or parenthetically (Петар је, изгледа, одустао).
4. Clitic Constraints & Word Order
Serbian clitic rules dictate that clitics must follow the first prosodic constituent. If an evidential element starts the utterance, be careful with pauses and hosts:
• For изгледа, you can introduce a subordinate clause with the complementizer да (Изгледа да је отишао), where да hosts the clitic је.
• In contrast, наводно is an adverb and cannot govern a declarative content complement clause headed by да (*Наводно да је отишао is ungrammatical; note, however, that like тобоже, it readily combines with purpose clauses introduced by да or да би, e.g., Дошао је наводно да помогне). To place it initially in a declarative statement, either drop the intonational comma pause so наводно serves as the clitic host (Наводно је отишао), or keep the parenthetical pause and provide an overt stressed host immediately following it (Наводно, он је отишао or Наводно, отишао је).
Examples (5)
- Министар је, наводно, поднео оставку, али влада то још није званично потврдила.
The minister has allegedly submitted his resignation, but the government has not yet officially confirmed it.
Word by Word: Minister auxiliary, allegedly, submitted resignation, but government that still not officially confirmed.
Here 'наводно' functions as a parenthetical reportative marker: the speaker relays unverified external news without confirming whether it is true or false.
- Отишао је у собу тобоже да учи, а заправо је играо игрице целу ноћ.
He went to his room ostensibly to study, but in fact he was playing games all night.
Word by Word: Went auxiliary into room ostensibly that studies, but actually auxiliary played games whole night.
'Тобоже' introduces feigned behavior or a false front; the speaker actively signals that the stated purpose ('to study') was merely a pretext.
- Погледај ове тамне облаке; изгледа да ће ускоро пасти киша.
Look at those dark clouds; it seems like it will rain soon.
Word by Word: Look these dark clouds; looks that will soon fall rain.
'Изгледа да' marks an inference drawn from physical, observable evidence (the dark clouds), not from hearsay or pretense.
- Професор је, изгледа, заборавио да нам пошаље материјале за испит.
The professor, it seems, forgot to send us the exam materials.
Word by Word: Professor auxiliary, it-seems, forgot that us sends materials for exam.
'Изгледа' is used parenthetically without 'да', inserted directly into the clause to express a deduction.
- Наводно су се венчали у тајности прошле суботе.
They reportedly got married in secret last Saturday.
Word by Word: Reportedly auxiliary-they reflexive married in secrecy last Saturday.
When integrated clause-initially without a comma pause, 'наводно' serves as the prosodic host for the clitic cluster 'су се'.
Common Mistakes
Using 'тобоже' instead of 'наводно' when reporting claims in objective contexts.
Аутор тобоже тврди да су подаци тачни.Аутор наводно тврди да су подаци тачни.'Тобоже' denotes a deliberate lie, sham, or hypocrisy. In neutral academic or journalistic contexts, use 'наводно' to remain non-committal without accusing the subject of deceptive behavior.
Placing pronominal or verbal clitics directly across an intonation pause after 'изгледа'.
Изгледа, га је видео јуче у граду.Изгледа да га је видео јуче у граду.A comma pause after 'изгледа' creates an independent prosodic unit; enclitics like 'га је' cannot lean across the pause. You must either introduce the complementizer 'да' or place the clitics after another prosodic host.
Combining parenthetical 'изгледа' with an unnecessary 'да' inside a main clause.
Он је изгледа да заборавио кључеве.Он је, изгледа, заборавио кључеве.'Да' is used only when 'изгледа' acts as an impersonal governing verb heading a subordinate clause (e.g., 'Изгледа да је заборавио...'). When inserted parenthetically inside the clause, omit 'да'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To convey reported claims, skepticism, or inference using 'наводно', 'тобоже', and 'изгледа', learners need a solid grasp of reported discourse and general modal particles that modulate epistemic certainty and speaker stance.
- Reporting What Someone Said
Understanding how claims, speech, and second-hand information are reported syntactically provides the conceptual foundation for using evidential and distancing adverbs like наводно, тобоже, and изгледа.
Level 4 - баш / већ / тек / ипак / ваљда / зарMeaningful Conversation Particles
Familiarity with modal and discourse particles that alter speaker commitment and stance (such as ваљда) prepares learners for the nuanced epistemic stance expressed by these markers.

Related Patterns
- ваљда / можда / сигурноDegrees of Certainty
While 'наводно' and 'изгледа' specify the evidential source (hearsay vs. deduction), 'ваљда', 'можда', and 'сигурно' express pure degrees of subjective certainty.
Level 5 - Parentheticals and Clitic Placement
Explains how parenthetical inserts like 'изгледа' or 'наводно' interact with Serbian second-position clitic chains.
Level 6 - као даAs if
'Као да' ('as if') shares simulative and counterfactual semantics with 'тобоже', frequently contrasting perceived reality with pretense.
