зар / зар не

Questions with an Expectation

Level 3Sounds Like zar; zar ne u pitan̂u

Use зар when asking a question where reality contradicts your expectations (expressing disbelief or shock: 'Is it really true that...?'). Use зар не at the beginning of a negative question ('Don't you...?') or at the very end of a statement as an invariant tag ('..., right?' / '..., isn't that so?').

How It Works

1. Meaning and Pragmatic Function
In Serbian, зар turns an ordinary yes/no question into an emotionally charged one. It signals that what you see or hear clashes with your prior assumptions:

  • Affirmative зар: You thought something was not the case, but evidence shows it is true (e.g., Зар већ идеш? — 'Are you really leaving already?!').
  • Negative зар / зар не: You thought something was the case, but it turns out not to be, expressing reproach or surprise (e.g., Зар не знаш? — 'Don't you know?!').
  • Tag Question (..., зар не?): Appended to the end of any declarative sentence to invite agreement, equivalent to '..., right?' or '..., isn't it?'.

2. Position and Clitic Ordering
Unlike the enclitic question marker ли, зар carries its own stress and stands at the beginning of the clause. Because it occupies the first stressed position, all second-position clitics (short pronouns and auxiliary verbs) must attach immediately behind it:

  • Зар си му рекао? (NOT: *Зар рекао си му?)
  • Зар се не сећаш? ('Don't you remember?')

3. зар vs. Neutral Questions
Compare:

  • Да ли учиш? = Neutral inquiry ('Are you studying?').
  • Зар учиш? = Loaded inquiry ('Are you seriously studying right now?! I thought you were finished!').

4. Invariant Tag Question
At the end of a sentence, зар не? never changes its form. Regardless of the gender, number, or tense of the main verb, it remains identical: Он долази, зар не? / Они су дошли, зар не?

Examples (5)

  1. Зар је већ поноћ?

    Is it midnight already?!

Word by Word: Particle is already midnight?

The speaker assumed it was earlier; 'зар' expresses genuine surprise and disbelief at the time.

  2. Зар не волиш чоколаду?

    Don't you like chocolate?!

Word by Word: Particle not like-you chocolate?

Combines 'зар' with a negated verb to show astonishment, assuming everyone normally likes chocolate.

  3. Сутра не радимо, зар не?

    We don't work tomorrow, right?

Word by Word: Tomorrow not work-we, particle not?

'Зар не?' functions as an invariant question tag at the end of a statement to check agreement.

  4. Зар си му све признао?

Did you really confess everything to him?!

Word by Word: Particle auxiliary-you him-DAT everything confessed?

Notice that clitics 'си' and 'му' directly follow 'зар', because 'зар' occupies the first accented slot.

  5. Они живе у Београду, зар не?

They live in Belgrade, don't they?

Word by Word: They live in Belgrade, particle not?

Illustrates 'зар не?' confirming a third-person plural statement without changing form.

Common Mistakes

  • Using "зар" for a plain information question.

    Different MeaningЗар се зовеш Ана?
    Да ли се зовеш Ана?

"Зар се зовеш Ана?" is correct, but it sounds like "Is your name really Ana?!". Use "Да ли" or "ли" when you simply want to ask.

  • Double-marking questions by combining 'зар' with 'да ли' or 'ли'.

    Зар да ли долазиш сутра?
    Зар долазиш сутра?

'Зар' already establishes the interrogative clause on its own. Never add 'да ли' or 'ли' to the same clause.

  • Adding the pronoun "ти" after "зар".

Different MeaningЗар ти си рекао истину?
    Зар си рекао истину?

"Зар ти си рекао истину?" is correct, but the stressed "ти" asks "Did YOU of all people tell the truth?". The short "Зар си рекао истину?" asks it without that stress.

Learn This First

To frame questions using 'зар' or the tag 'зар не', learners must first know how standard neutral questions are formed (with 'да ли' or 'ли') and how basic negation works, since 'зар' contrasts directly with neutral questions by implying disbelief or seeking confirmation.
